In recent years, psychoanalysis has undergone a transformation away from an exclusive focus on repressive symptomatology to include dissociative symptomatology. Taking Sullivan's understanding of the self as a system, Dobrich proposes a continuum in which defensive dissociation may occur ranging from a more or less continuous self-system to a discontinuous self-system.
