Dear ICP Community,
Welcome back! I hope everyone had an opportunity to enjoy some rest and restoration over the summer. We are excited to begin a new academic year and to welcome our community back to ICP.
There is always a particular energy at the start of the year as classes resume, programs come together, and new candidates and interns begin finding their place within the Institute. I look forward to meeting those who are new to ICP and to seeing familiar faces back in our hallways and, of course, on Zoom. The learning, clinical inquiry, and meaningful connections that take place across our programs are at the heart of who we are as an academic and clinical community.
Our divisions have planned a wonderful range of continuing education opportunities for the months ahead. SICP, CSAB, the Trauma Studies Center, and other ICP programs will offer workshops, presentations, and discussions that reflect the depth and diversity of our community’s clinical interests. These include programs exploring dependency and desire, the diagnosis and treatment of eating disorders, ARFID, the meaning of the body, and the Trauma Book Club. You will find additional information and registration details throughout this newsletter and in upcoming announcements.

Rise for NYC
I hope you will save the date for our Rise for NYC Benefit Breakfast on October 29 at the Harvard Club of New York City. You will hear more about the event from our Development Committee, but I hope many of you will support ICP by attending or making a donation. ICP depends on the generosity of our community to continue providing accessible, high-quality psychotherapy and exceptional clinical training.

Training Requirements
The information on trainings below is primarily for active members of the ICP internal community. However, if you are a New York State mandated reporter I urge you to please pay attention to the updated NYS-required mandated reporter training as this is also necessary for you.
If you are an active member of the ICP internal community, you have received or will soon receive separate emails with detailed information about several new and ongoing training requirements. Please review those communications carefully to determine which requirements apply to you. If you have questions, please contact your program coordinator or manager.
- Best Practices in Suicide-Safer Care
This in-person training is required for all ICP interns and candidates in every program. Two sessions will be offered in October, and participants may choose which one to attend. If you have already completed the suicide-safer care training at ICP, you do not need to take it again this year.

- Updated NYS-Required Mandated Reporter Training
New York State requires all mandated reporters to complete the updated training by November 17, 2026. Depending on when you last completed mandated reporter training, you may need to take the full updated course or a 15-minute addendum. ICP will collect certificates only from those who treat ICP patients or supervise ICP therapists.

- Sexual Harassment Prevention Training
ICP community members who will receive a 1099 from ICP for 2026 and who meet the applicable work requirements must complete sexual harassment prevention training by November 15, 2026. Those who have already completed a qualifying training during 2026 do not need to take it again but must submit their certificate of completion.

- HIPAA Training
ICP is instituting a HIPAA training requirement for all employees and everyone affiliated with any ICP division in any capacity. The deadline is February 1, 2027. Anyone who has already completed HIPAA training during 2026 does not need to take it again but must submit their certificate of completion.

Goodbyes and New Beginnings
This summer also brought several important staff transitions. While change is an inevitable part of any organization, saying goodbye to colleagues who have become central to our work is never easy.
We first say goodbye to Shea Smith, who began at ICP as an intern and quickly became an invaluable member of our team, ultimately rising to the position of Assistant Director of Clinical Operations. Shea was exceptional in every aspect of her role, whether the work called for clinical judgment, operational problem-solving, or support for a colleague. She became a trusted and invaluable presence across ICP, and her absence is truly felt. Although I was very sad to see her leave, it is heartening to see her continue to grow in the field as she assumes an operational leadership role at another institute in New York City. We are grateful for all that Shea contributed to ICP and wish her tremendous success.
We also say goodbye to Oranda Barnes, our Administrative Coordinator, who held several crucial positions during her years at ICP. Oranda was extraordinarily competent, thoughtful, and consistently excellent at her work. She could be counted on to understand what needed to be done and to do it exceptionally well, and she was always a pleasure to work with. She was, quite simply, an amazing member of our team and is truly missed. Oranda recently graduated with her degree in mental health counseling and is beginning clinical work at a treatment center in New York. We are very proud of her and excited to see her begin this next stage of her professional life.
Also leaving ICP is Cara Hanhurst, who served as Program Coordinator for our CSAB division as well as our in-house marketing specialist. Cara initially joined ICP as CSAB’s Program Coordinator and immediately made the role her own, bringing an exceptional level of care and competence to the division. We quickly learned of her prior marketing experience, and Cara ably added that work to her responsibilities at ICP. She helped us professionalize our email and listserv strategies and offered thoughtful guidance on our broader marketing efforts. We wish Cara and her family all the best as they move to another part of New York.
Sydney Boyum, Program Coordinator for Adult Treatment and PCGS, has also left ICP. Sydney brought care, compassion, and warmth to his work with both programs and was well liked by the many candidates, clinicians, and colleagues with whom he worked. We thank him for his contributions to ICP and wish him all the best as he moves into his next chapter.
At the same time, we are delighted to welcome several new staff members and to recognize a well-deserved promotion.
Lucia Harrison, who joined ICP as a receptionist, has been promoted to Administrative Coordinator and Interim Program Coordinator. From her first day, it was apparent that Lucia was a quick study who could handle just about any task placed before her. She has continued to take on new responsibilities with intelligence, flexibility, and remarkable competence. A recent honors graduate of UC Berkeley, Lucia plans to pursue a master’s degree in social work and a career in the mental health field. We are very fortunate to have her on our team.
Replacing Lucia at the reception desk is Maddy Levangie. Maddy is pursuing a master’s degree in interdisciplinary studies at NYU and was especially drawn to the opportunity to work for a mission-driven organization. We are very happy to welcome her to ICP and look forward to having our community get to know her.
Jamie Farkas has joined us as our new Marketing and Community Engagement Coordinator. Jamie brings extensive experience in strategic marketing, audience development, communications, newsletters, social media, and event promotion. She holds a degree in communication from George Washington University and has held senior marketing positions throughout her career. She is also a committed mental health advocate. Her energy, creativity, and passion for ICP’s mission are already evident, and we are excited about the ways she will help us strengthen our communications and deepen engagement across our community.
Marlon Grant started this week as our new Medical Billing and Financial Operations Coordinator. Marlon will be involved in all aspects of ICP’s billing and payroll operations. He brings substantial experience in accounting, financial reporting, billing systems, process improvement, and financial analysis, as well as an MBA from Brooklyn College. His background includes financial roles at the Institute for Justice and Opportunity and Montefiore Medical Center. We are thrilled to have him on board, and I am confident that his expertise and presence will make an important difference at ICP.
We look forward to welcoming a few additional staff members in the weeks ahead as we continue strengthening the team that supports ICP’s clinical, academic, and organizational work.
As we begin this new academic year together, I am grateful for the knowledge, commitment, and care that each of you brings to ICP. I look forward to another year of learning, collaboration, and growth across our community.
