This 2-hour workshop explores how trauma rewires the brain at different developmental stages and under various circumstances, showing that not all trauma fits the PTSD diagnosis.

We’ll examine trauma’s impact on the nervous system, common misdiagnoses, and differences between early neglect, adolescent violence, and systemic adversity. Participants will learn how factors like age, type, intensity, and timing of trauma shape symptoms and guide intervention. Understanding these distinctions improves treatment by aligning interventions with each individual’s neurobiological adaptations.

The workshop emphasizes the importance of recognizing diverse trauma syndromes to support deeper healing and recovery.

Antonieta Contreras, a former banker and business consultant trained as a mathematician, is a Gestalt-trained psychotherapist with a Master’s in Social Work from NYU. She specializes in trauma, holding certifications from the Institute of Contemporary Psychotherapy and NYU School of Medicine. Antonieta combines trauma modalities and contemplative practices learned in India and Tibetan Buddhism in her private practice. She serves as Board Member and Treasurer for the NYC Trauma Therapists, and as a consultant, supervisor, and former co-director of ICP’s Trauma Studies Program. Antonieta is also the author of Traumatization and Its Aftermath.
