Harm Reduction is an essential practice for all social workers, especially amidst an ongoing overdose crisis. increasing inequities, and widespread misunderstanding of substance use and mental health issues. Within the LGBTQAI community substance use is amplified by higher rates of use, which require specifically attuned harm reduction approaches. It is imperative for social workers to have a clear framework to support themselves and those they work with. This workshop will provide participants with a familiarity and understanding of the core principles of the Harm Reduction Model. Through experiential learning that will incorporate role plays, dialogue, and an overview of harm reduction principles, participants will begin/continue to learn how to apply a harm reduction lens to their clinical work within the LGBTQIA community. This workshop will also explore and discuss complementary interventions that support harm reduction work in practice. There will be an opportunity for participants to share case examples, engage in teaching/learning and receive peer support/feedback. Participants should come prepared for an interactive workshop that will invite you to self-reflect, engage in partner shares, and larger group practices.
About the Presenter:
Giorgio Handman is a social worker, artist, and a lover of harm reduction. He graduated from The Silberman School of Social Work in 2012. Giorgio completed a mindfulness facilitator training at the Engaged Mindfulness Institute and has incorporated mindfulness into his social work practice and harm reduction work with young people experiencing homelessness, veterans, people living with HIV/AIDS, and individuals navigating substance use and currently practices harm reduction at the REACH clinic at Mount Sinai. Giorgio provides harm reduction trainings at hospitals, shelters, social work schools and social service agencies from New York to Australia. Giorgio is committed to working in community to promote wellness, joy and harmony.
An important note about CEs: ICP is an approved provider of continuing education credits for social workers, mental health counselors, marriage and family therapists, and psychoanalysts through the New York Department of Education.
