Home is a Foreign Place: Immigrant Journeys
with Shari Appollon, LCSW, and Lilly Pavlinovic, PhD,
with Samanta Batra Mehta, MS, as discussant
Through an intimate exploration of the immigrant experience, psychoanalysts Shari Appollon, LCSW, and Lilly Pavlinovic, PhD, speak to journeys of dislocation and the search for home. Drawing on their clinical work and personal histories, both speakers delve into the emotional mapping of migration, examining themes of loss, longing, identity-formation and transformation. Shari Appollon’s paper contends with the impact of inter-generational trauma and unconscious elements of melancholia through the voices of her Haitian mother and grandmother and the effects of colonization, and political and economic instability on their homeland. Lilly Pavlinovic’s paper explores the tender and charged analytic space between the psychoanalyst and her patient against the backdrop of a shared language, and a shared culture torn apart by war and the traumatic splitting of the former Yugoslavia. The analyst in these papers is a transitional object, linking past to present. The cocoon of the treatment room is a space to articulate profound loss, re-configure alienation and reconstruct the irreconcilable in an attempt to suture the wounds of history.

Shari Appollon, LCSW, is a Haitian-American psychoanalyst, and a graduate of the National Institute for the Psychotherapies and of the One Year Program at The Stephen Mitchell Relational Study Center. Shari is the Associate Director of Clinical Services at NYC Affirmative Psychotherapy. She is the recipient of NIP’s 2020 Educator’s Award for her paper “The Triple Entendre” which was published in Psychoanalytic Dialogues in 2021. Her paper “The Parable of the Sower” was runner-up for Division 39’s 2020 Candidate Essay Contest. She writes primarily about culture and psychoanalytic theory. Shari is in private practice in Brooklyn, NY.
Dr. Lilly Pavlinovic, clinical psychologist and psychoanalyst, is a graduate of the NYU Postdoctoral Program in Psychotherapy and Psychoanalysis, She received her PhD in Clinical Psychology from the Derner Institute at Adelphi University, and her M.A. in Psychoanalytic Studies from the New School. She has a B.A. in Comparative Literature and Philosophy from the University of Zagreb in Croatia. Dr. Pavlinovic has presented papers at various international conferences. Her scholarly interests include working with patients with trauma histories related to war and immigration, transformations of unrepresented states, and Bionian and Post-Bionian Field theory. She maintains a private practice in New York City.
Samanta Batra Mehta, MS, is an advanced psychoanalytic candidate at ICP and a visual artist based in New York. Her artwork explores themes relating to identity, memory and migration and has been exhibited in museums, galleries and art fairs internationally. She is a recipient of NAAP's Gradiva Award for her art, and the Joan Mitchell Foundation's Painters and Sculptors Grant Award. Samanta holds an MS degree from the London School of Economics.
