The Center for the Study of Anorexia and Bulimia was established as a division of the Institute for Contemporary Psychotherapy in 1979 and is the oldest non-profit eating disorders clinic in New York City.
Using an eclectic approach, the professional staff and affiliates are on the cutting edge of treatment in their field. The treatment staff includes social workers, psychologists, registered nurses and nutritionists, all with special training in the treatment of eating disorders.
Treatment
Anorexia nervosa, bulimia, and compulsive eating are serious psychological disorders that can have severe physical complications. Anorexia, “the starvation sickness,” is characterized by an excessive loss of weight, a pervasive fear of fatness, and a constant preoccupation with food and dieting. Bulimia, “the binge-purge syndrome,” is a recurrent pattern of binge eating followed by some form of self-induced purging. The uncontrollable and compelling desire to eat is known as compulsive eating. Research has indicated that early recognition and treatment of eating disorders provide a very good chance for recovery.
CSAB offers outpatient individual and group therapy on a sliding fee scale for all eating disorders. Medical consultations and referrals are arranged when necessary. We also provide a monthly Open House and Support Group for families and friends to help explore the best ways to talk about and deal with issues related to eating disorders and a Teen Support Group for those interested in learning more about eating disorders, and treatment options. Our clinicians appreciate the role of cultural differences in mental health treatment and we strive to cultivate a culturally sensitive treatment atmosphere.
