SUMMARY:The Challenges of Working with Mixed-Status Immigrant Couples: Using IFS and Relational Approaches
DESCRIPTION:The Challenges of Working with Mixed-Status Immigrant Couples: Using IFS and Relational Approaches\n\nwith Rosa Bramble Caballero\, LCSW-R\nSaturday\, April 6th from 10am-1pm on Zoom and in-person at ICP \n  \nOffered in-person and virtually via Zoom!\nApproved for 3 CE Credits!\nImmigration into the United States is fraught with challenges and traumatic experiences\, largely unaddressed by couple’s therapy. The current anti-immigrant\, socio-political atmosphere contributes to a climate where immigrants are seen as undesirable\, and a threat to the economy\, safety\, and culture. Moreover\, recent priorities for raids and deportation are affecting the everyday fabric of daily life for this population. Immigrant and mixed-status couples are experiencing traumatic stress affecting their relational dynamics.\nThe goal of the workshop is for participants to gain an understanding of how the IFS model provides the language and resources to help mixed-status couples heal the pre and post-migratory trauma. Through the use of case studies\, the workshop will address the highly stressful and potentially traumatic experiences that immigrants undergo at different stages of the migration process\, and IFS interventions that support the process of healing for the couple. \nAbout Presenter:  \nRosa Maria Bramble Caballero\, LCSW-R\, is a Certified IFS Therapist. She’s the President of Caballero Consulting Services where she specializes in the treatment of trauma survivors. She is also L2 trained in Sensorimotor Psychotherapy\, EMDR\, and Coherent Breathing. She facilitates supervision\, and workshops and provides organizational capacity building in the areas of migration trauma\, diversity and inclusion\, maternal infant health\, community violence intervention\, and vicarious traumatization. Rosa was born in Caracas\, Venezuela\, and is bilingual in Spanish-English. \nFor any questions\, including those about accessibility\, or to request accommodations please contact Oranda Barnes at facts@icpnyc.org. \nAn important note about CEUs: ICP is an approved provider of continuing education credits for social workers\, mental health counselors\, marriage and family therapists\, and psychoanalysts through the New York Department of Education. This virtual interactive seminar will address these questions and many others that family and friends often have\, but don’t know whom to ask. \nAbout the Presenter\nJacob Pine is a licensed Clinical Social Worker in private practice in Manhattan. He grew up in New York City\, and did his undergraduate studies at The Johns Hopkins University and The Peabody Conservatory in Baltimore. He earned his Masters degree in social work from Fordham University\, and received his certificate in the integrated treatment of eating disorders from the Center for the Study of Anorexia and Bulimia in 2010. He has been Co-director of CSAB for 5 years. He has presented\, supervised\, and taught in numerous capacities\, and has had multiple articles published about his experience running an eating disorder group for men. He is well-versed in a wide variety of theories and techniques\, and uses them as indicated by both scientific research and professional experience. \n\n__________________________________________________ \nTo subscribe to ICP’s Mailing List for Mental Health Providers\, click here. \nRefund Policy: Please note that refunds for all CSAB events are available up until one week before the start of the workshop or module unless otherwise stated. SUMMARY:Navigating Asexuality in Clinical Practice
DESCRIPTION:Virtual Workshop:\nNavigating Asexuality in Clinical Practice\n\nwith Dr. Morag A. Yule\, C. Psych\n  \nWednesday\, January 31\, 2024; 7:00pm-9:00pm on Zoom\nThis event will be approved for 2 NYS and 2 AASECT CE credits \nAsexuality is characterized by a persistent lack of sexual attraction\, and asexuality is often an intrinsic part of an individual’s identity. Asexual people\, often referred to as “aces\,” may have romantic feelings and the spectrum of asexuality includes various identities and differing levels of interest in sexual activity. \nThis presentation delves into the understanding and incorporation of asexual identities in clinical practice\, aiming to enhance practitioners’ competency in addressing the unique needs of asexual individuals and their partners. It begins by defining asexuality\, challenging common misconceptions\, and highlighting the diversity within the asexual community. The talk emphasizes the importance of differentiating asexuality from other conditions\, such as hypoactive sexual desire disorder\, and the implications for misdiagnosis and treatment. \nCase studies and interactive discussions will facilitate a deeper understanding of how to support asexual individuals through informed\, empathetic\, and tailored care. By the end of this session\, participants will be equipped with practical tools and insights to navigate asexuality in their clinical work. \nAbout the presenter: \nDr. Morag Yule received her PhD in clinical psychology from the University of British Columbia (UBC) and completed her clinical residency at the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH) in Toronto. She is the founder and director of Ontario Sex Therapy\, a private practice in Toronto. Dr. Yule is especially recognized for her ground-breaking studies of asexuality and its assessment. \nDr. Yule provides psychological services for a broad range of sexual issues. She has extensive training and experience treating sexual dysfunction\, including problems with sexual desire\, difficulty experiencing sexual arousal and orgasm\, and sexual pain. She also works with those exploring sexual identity\, struggling with hypersexuality/out of control sexual behavior\, navigating atypical/unique sexual interests\, and moving past difficult sexual experiences and sexual trauma. In addition to her specialization in treating sexual difficulties\, has a particular focus on treating OCD with sexuality-related themes such as pedophilia OCD (POCD) and sexual orientation OCD (SO-OCD). SUMMARY:Group Therapy for Eating Disordered Patients
DESCRIPTION:Virtual Workshop:\nGroup Therapy for Eating Disordered Patients\nwith Andrea Schneer\, LCSW\nFriday\, December 1\, 2023\, 12:00-2:00pm\nApproved for 2 NYS CE credits \nEating disorder symptoms are understood to be metaphors that when deciphered\, can shed light on the etiology and function of the symptoms. Trauma and neglect are part of that etiology. The symptoms express what is unknown\, and/or unbearable for the individual to experience or to remember. Group topics include: “Mother=Food\,” The Dinner Table\,” “Health\,” “Too much and Too Little.” The structure provides room to expand the patient’s thinking about what fuels the eating disorder thus providing opportunity for healthy responses. This workshop describes a series of groups devised in a Day Treatment setting for patients with eating disorders\, adaptable to an outpatient group. \nAn important note about CEs:\nICP is an approved provider of continuing education credits for social workers\, mental health counselors\, marriage and family therapists\, psychologists and psychoanalysts through the New York Department of Education. If your license is from a different state\, please contact your state’s licensing board to find out if they will accept CE credits for New York State. If your license is from another state\, please enter your license number with your state in parenthesis\, ie 54321 (CA).\n__________________________________________________ \nOops! SUMMARY:The Truth Shall Set You Free: Ethics and Authenticity in Session
DESCRIPTION:Virtual Workshop:\nThe Truth Shall Set You Free: Ethics and Authenticity in Session\nwith Mark O’Connell\, LCSW-R\, MFA\n \nApproved for 3 NYS CE Credits\nAs therapists\, our most essential instrument to engage our clients is our selves–no matter what theories or techniques guide our work. But very little is written or taught about how we can prepare and use our instrument in session\, moment-to-moment\, with each client–particularly in terms of our implicit/ non-verbal communication as it transmits through our eyes\, faces\, bodies\, and voices. The more aware we are of our unique instrument and how we use it\, the more ethical our clinical practice will be with each unique person who seeks our help. \nUtilizing his experience as both an actor and a therapist\, Mark O’Connell will offer you ways to prepare and to use your instrument with awareness\, responsiveness\, authenticity\, intentionality\, versatility\, responsibility\, and self-care. Participants will discuss ethical dilemmas in clinical practice with individuals\, couples\, and families\, including questions around self-disclosure\, countertransference\, and confidentiality. And we will study\, from an ethical perspective\, how we can most effectively use ourselves authentically\, even in the most challenging clinical scenarios. Mark will also guide you through theatrical concepts of “objectives\,” and “roles” within relationships to gain perspectives on effective communication–beyond the words we speak–and to develop and trust your own sense of ethical and clinical best practices. \nAbout the Presenter \nMark O’Connell\, LCSW-R\, MFA\, is a psychotherapist in New York City\, and a trained actor. He’s the author of the books The Performing Art of Therapy: Acting Insights and Techniques for Clinicians\, and Modern Brides & Modern Grooms. His wide ranging articles have been published in various clinical journals and popular sources\, and he writes the Psychology Today blog Quite Queerly.\nFor more information about Mark’s workshops on using the therapist’s “instrument\,” visit:\nwww.theperformingartoftherapy.com.\nAnd for more information about Mark’s psychotherapy practice visit: www.markoconnelltherapist.com \nFor questions about accessibility or to request accommodations please contact Oranda Barnes\, Program Manager\, at 212-333-3444 ext 107 or at@icpnyc.org.\nRefund Policy: Please note that refunds for all AT events are available up until one week before the start of the workshop or module\, unless otherwise stated. \n__________________________________________________ \n  \nOops! SUMMARY:The Elephant Not in the Room: Will Psychoanalysis Survive the Screen?
DESCRIPTION:Workshop: The Elephant not in the Room:\nWill Psychoanalysis Survive the Screen?\nwith Leora Trub\, PhD and Joyce Slochower\, PhD\n \nDon’t miss out on this 2 NYS CE Credit virtual talk on Thursday\, September 28th from 7pm-9pm on Zoom with Leora Trub\, PhD and Joyce Slochower\, PhD \nUntil Covid upended the psychoanalytic frame as we knew it\, most of us assumed that the therapeutic process required that analysts’ and patients’ bodies occupy the same physical space. While Covid forced us to abandon these assumptions\, we anticipated\, even yearned for the day when we could return to in-person work. \nToday we’re in a gray zone. To mask or not to mask? To remain remote or risk exposure? While these decisions in part are informed by clinical considerations\, our personal necessities are likely also implicated. Do we rationalize when we declare remote therapy equivalent (or nearly equivalent) to in-person work? Do we minimize the health risk to ourselves and our patients when we return to an in-person model? In this talk we invite you to interrogate the factors—conscious or not—that inform our use (or rejection) of remote work. We also aim to explore the short- and long-term implications of working through a screen for the psychoanalytic field as a whole. \nLeora Trub\, a clinical psychologist\, has written extensively on these issues. She runs the Digital Media and Psychology lab at Pace University where she investigates how technologies affect our conceptions of ourselves and our relationships with others. \nJoyce Slochower will act as facilitator and discussant. \nPresenter – Leora Trub\, PhD \nLeora Trub\, Ph.D.\, is Associate Professor at Pace University’s doctoral program in School/Clinical-Child Psychology\, and has a private practice in New York City\, where she treats adolescents\, adults and couples. Her primary research interest is the study of identity development\, relationship formation and psychological well-being in the age of technology\, and the implications of digital technology on clinical practice. She is the author of numerous papers and chapters on clinical practice in the digital age\, and the relationship between technology and psychological constructs including attachment\, emotional regulation\, intimacy\, self-presentation and mindfulness. Her research has been published in a range of research\, clinical\, and psychoanalytic journals. It has also been reported on in various news outlets\, including the New York Times. \nDiscussant – Joyce Slochower\, PhD\, ABPP \nJoyce Slochower Ph.D.\, ABPP\, is Professor Emerita of Psychology at Hunter College & the Graduate Center\, CUNY. Joyce is faculty and supervisor at the NYU Postdoctoral Program\, the Steven Mitchell Center\, the National Training Program of NIP (all in New York)\, Philadelphia Center for Relational Studies in Philadelphia and the Psychoanalytic Institute of Northern California in San Francisco. She is on the Editorial Boards of Psychoanalytic Dialogues\, Journal of the American Psychoanalytic Association\, Ricerca Psicoanalitica and Psychoanalytic Perspectives and is on the Board of the IARPP. Joyce has published over 100 articles on various aspects of psychoanalytic theory and technique. Second Editions of her two books\, Holding and Psychoanalysis: A Relational Perspective (1996) and Psychoanalytic Collisions (2006)\, were released in 2014 by Routledge. She is co-Editor\, with Lew Aron and Sue Grand\, of “De-idealizing relational theory: a Critique from within” and “Decentering Relational Theory: A Comparative Critique (2018\, Routledge). Her forthcoming book\, Elephants Under the Couch: Psychoanalysis and the Unspoken\, is in press with Karnac. She is in private practice in New York City where she sees individuals and couples\, runs supervision and study groups. \nFor questions about accessibility or to request accommodations please contact Oranda Barnes\, Program Manager\, at 212-333-3444 ext 107 or at@icpnyc.org.\nRefund Policy: Please note that refunds for all AT events are available up until one week before the start of the workshop or module\, unless otherwise stated. \n__________________________________________________ \n  \nOops!
