SUMMARY:In-Person Lecture: Risking Intimacy and Creative Transformation in Psychoanalysis\, Lauren Levine\, PhD
DESCRIPTION:In-Person Lecture: Risking Intimacy and Creative Transformation in Psychoanalysis\, \nLauren Levine\, PhD \n \nIn this presentation\, I will consider the transformative power of stories to create shared symbolic meaning and coherence out of ungrieved trauma. Through evocative clinical stories\, I’ll explore creativity as transformative\, emergent in the clinical process\, drawing on film\, dance\, and dreams as frames for experience exceeding what words alone can capture. In analysis\, we dwell in stories\, in associations\, echoes and reverberations. Apres coup. In the enigmatic and ineffable. As an analyst and writer\, I’m interested in the stories we tell\, individually and collectively\, the interstitial gaps created by unmetabolized trauma\, and the potential for an intimate psychoanalytic process to help patients reclaim their memory and creative agency and become the storyteller of their own lives. \n  \nFriday\, January 24\, 2025\, from 7 to 9 pm\, in person at ICP\n Refreshments and conversation at 9 pm following the lecture\nApproved for 2 NYS CE Credits!\n\nDr. Lauren Levine is Joint Editor-in-Chief of Psychoanalytic Dialogues. Her book\, Risking Intimacy and Creative Transformation in Psychoanalysis\, was published by Routledge in April 2023. Lauren teaches and presents both nationally and internationally\, and has published articles about creativity\, mourning\, intergenerational and relational trauma\, and resilience. She is on the Faculty of NYU Postdoctoral Program in Psychoanalysis\, and The Stephen Mitchell Relational Study Center\, where she’s former Co-Director of the One Year Program in Relational Studies. Lauren is Visiting Faculty at the Institute for Relational and Group Psychotherapy in Athens\, Greece\, and the Tampa Bay Psychoanalytic Society. She is a psychoanalyst in private practice in NYC. \n\nFor any questions\, please contact Dominika Mazurová at SICP@icpnyc.org. \n  \nAn important note about CEUs: ICP is an approved provider of continuing education credits for social workers\, mental health counselors\, marriage and family therapists\, and psychoanalysts through the New York Department of Education. SUMMARY:In-Person Lecture: The Gendered Body as Home: Two Analysts’ Journeys “Coming Out” to Their Patients
DESCRIPTION:The Gendered Body as Home:\nTwo Analysts’ Journeys “Coming Out” to Their Patients\n \nwith Gabriel DeCicco\, LCSW-R and\nBalin Anderson\, LCSW with\nSandra Silverman as discussant\nFriday\, November 15th\, 2024 7pm-9pm\nRefreshments and conversation at 9 following the lecture\n  \nApproved for 2 NYS CE Credits!\nTogether\, Gabriel DeCicco\, LCSW and Balin Anderson\, LCSW explore the clinical impacts of an analyst’s pregnancy and an analyst’s gender transition; the attendant body changes impact treatment in significant ways. Transitioning to a congruent gender identity or choosing to gestate brings a therapist face to face with their own embodiment; heightened attention to embodiment saturates the therapeutic dyad. A pregnant body is home to the growing baby; a pregnant person grapples with feeling at home with oneself alongside unprecedented changes. A gender transition reflects an effort to come home to one’s body; to belong within the contours of one’s own body. Balin and Gabriel will highlight the interplay of gender\, sexuality\, and identity inherent in these embodied gestational experiences – that of the analyst giving birth and of the analyst being re-born. \nAbout the Presenters: \nGabriel DeCicco\, LCSW-R is a transgender psychoanalyst who has worked in the field of mental health for 20 years. He has an MSW from NYU School of Social Work and is a graduate of both the Psychodynamic Psychotherapy Program and the Psychoanalytic Program at ICP. He was a Clinical Assistant Professor at NYU Langone Medical Center from 2008 to 2015. He is the President of DeCicco Psychotherapy & Consulting\, LLC\, and has a full-time private practice in Manhattan\, where he sees patients both in-person and virtually in the tri-state area. \nBalin Anderson\, LCSW\nA psychoanalyst in private practice in Denver\, Colorado\, Balin Anderson LCSW is a graduate of the ICP’s Psychoanalytic Program. She earned her MSW from the George Warren Brown School of Social Work at Washington University in St. Louis\, Missouri. Balin began her career as a social worker at Planned Parenthood of New York City; she also served as a medical interpreter for Spanish-speaking patients. Balin is a faculty member at the Denver Institute for Psychoanalysis. \nSandra Silverman\, LCSW\n \nSandra Silverman LCSW is faculty and supervisor at ICP\, NIP\, and the Stephen Mitchell Center for Relational Studies where she is also co-chair of the committee on Diversity\, Equity\, and Inclusion. Sandra is an associate editor of Psychoanalytic Dialogues. She is in private practice in New York City and the Hudson Valley. \n  \nFor any questions\, please contact Dominika Mazurová at SICP@icpnyc.org. \nAn important note about CEUs: ICP is an approved provider of continuing education credits for social workers\, mental health counselors\, marriage and family therapists\, and psychoanalysts through the New York Department of Education. SUMMARY:SOLD OUT: In-Person Lecture: Enactment: Its Provocation by the Analyst
DESCRIPTION:The event has been sold out\, if you’d like to be placed on the waitlist\, please email SICP@icpnyc.org. \nEnactment: Its Provocation by the Analyst\n \nwith Robert Grossmark\, PhD\nFriday\, October 18th\, 2024 7pm-9pm\nRefreshments and conversation at 9 following the lecture \n  \nApproved for 2 NYS CE Credits!\nThis presentation will address challenges when working with patients whose trauma and neglect are not available for symbolization and mentalization. I suggest that the analytic relationship offers a unique situation that – following Laplanche – provokes enactments in which the unsymbolized and unrepresented can speak in their own idiom. Rather than seeking to understand and get out of enactments\, the analyst can unobtrusively companion the patient in states of fragmentation\, disorganization and non-relatedness and thus make space for early and inchoate trauma to speak. Enactment is thus regarded as an “untelling” of what has been trapped in the “unpast” (Scarfone) of continual painful repetition. When the analyst can companion the patient in the emergence of early\, wordless enactments and psychic spaces\, old and constraining “translations” are transformed\, pain that has never been suffered can finally be known by and with an Other\, and time\, self and relatedness are reconstituted. \n  \nAbout the Presenter: \nRobert Grossmark\, PhD\n \nRobert Grossmark\, Ph.D\, ABPP is a psychoanalyst in New York City. SUMMARY:In-Person Lecture: Expanding Dissociation Informed Psychoanalytic Practice: How to make conceptual sense of Not-me\, No-me\, & Many mes
DESCRIPTION:The SICP Friday Night Lecture Series Returns! Featuring In-Person events.\nExpanding Dissociation Informed Psychoanalytic Practice:\nHow to make conceptual sense of Not-me\, No-me\, & Many mes\n\nwith Johanna Dobrich\, LCSW\nFriday\, May 17th\, 2024 7:00-9:00pm in-person at ICP\n\n  \nApproved for 2 NYS CE Credits!\nIn recent years\, psychoanalysis has undergone a transformation away from an exclusive focus on repressive symptomatology to include dissociative symptomatology. Howell/Itkowitz’s dissociative unconscious\, Bollas’ unthought known\, Stern’s unformulated experience\, and my own unexperienced-experience\, regularly appear as constructs in both our theoretical and clinical formulations. Yet there remains a lot of ambiguity about the differences between defensive and ordinary dissociation and the varied forms defensive dissociation in particular may take. Many times\, people confuse dissociation as a defense from dissociation as a structure of the self. Taking Sullivan’s understanding of the self as a system\, I propose a continuum in which defensive dissociation may occur ranging from a more or less continuous self-system all the way up to a discontinuous self-system. I describe the difference between the ‘dissociation of content’ from ‘dissociation as a structure of the self\,’ highlighting clinical phenomena people may come to recognize in their practice. I go on to elaborate on some of the structural features of ‘dissociation as a structure of the self ’ and offer clinical examples. \nAbout Presenter:\n \nJohanna Dobrich is a licensed clinical social worker and graduate of ICP’s four-year psychoanalytic training program. She is on the Faculty at the ICP\, the Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy Study Center\, and the National Institute for the Psychotherapies\, where she teaches courses on trauma\, dissociation\, and contemporary psychoanalytic practice from a Relational perspective\, as well as supervises candidates in training. She is the author of the book “Working with Survivor Siblings in Psychoanalysis” for which she received the 2023 Sandor Ferenczi Award from the International Society for the Study of Trauma and Dissociation\, and has authored numerous articles on dissociation\, loss and mourning. SUMMARY:POSTPONED: LGBTQ History: Then and NowApril 12\, 19\, 26\, May 3\, 10\, 17
DESCRIPTION:Postponed\nLGBTQ History: Then & Now\nwith Gary Jacobson\, LCSW\, Kathleen Miller\, MFA\, LCSW\, & Anna Kramarsky\, PhD\nFridays: April 12\, 19\, 26\, May 3\, 10\, and 17 2024\n12:30pm-2:00pm at ICP\nThis course will provide an overview of contemporary LGBTQ experience\, owning the historical progress that has come to pass\, while also exploring the impact of more current events and concerns. For example\, while the AIDS epidemic shaped the experience of LGBTQ identified baby boomers\, how is Pre-exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP) impacting Gen Z youth and millennial young adults? Has there been a generational loss of information now that the Zeitgeist is greater acceptance and rights for the LGBTQ community\, and if so\, how does it and will it impact future generations? And perhaps most pressing\, what impact has the Covid-19 Pandemic and its cascading effects had on those who identify as LGBTQ? How have these effects been either mitigated or exacerbated by  other intersecting aspects of identity such as race\, class\, immigration and dis/ability (to name only a few)?  \nThese questions and more will be addressed over the course of 6 weeks\, through a combination of readings\, film and discussion. Together\, we will take a look back at the history of LGBTQ affirmative psychotherapy\, the racialized history of our current terms ‘gender’ and ‘sexuality\,’ and the experiences of various LGBTQ communities in relation to the AIDS epidemic. We will also look at the places where shame\, homophobia\, transphobia/misogyny\, social media/technology and body modification come up in our current\, and often remote\, consulting rooms.  \n———————————————————————- \nFor questions about accessibility or to request accommodations please contact Tobin Berliner at 212-333-3444 ext 109 or pcgs@icpnyc.org. \nRefund Policy: Please note that refunds for all PCGS events are available up until one week before the start of the workshop or module\, unless otherwise stated.\n\n  \n  \nNYS Continuing Education Information\n*The Institute for Contemporary Psychotherapy is recognized by the New York State Education Department’s State Board for Mental Health Practitioners as an approved provider of continuing education for licensed psychoanalysts. \n*The Institute for Contemporary Psychotherapy is recognized by the NYS Education Department State Board for Social Work as an approved provider of continuing education credit for licensed social workers. \n*The Institute for Contemporary Psychotherapy is recognized by the New York State Education Department’s State Board for Mental Health Practitioners as an approved provider of continuing education for licensed mental health counselors. \n*The Institute for Contemporary Psychotherapy is recognized by the New York State Education Department’s State Board for Mental Health Practitioners as an approved provider of continuing education for licensed marriage and family therapists. \n*The Institute for Contemporary Psychotherapy is recognized by the New York State Education Department’s State Board for Psychology as an approved provider of continuing education for licensed psychologists. \n*The Institute for Contemporary Psychotherapy is recognized by the New York State Education Department’s State Board for Mental Health Practitioners as an approved provider of continuing education for licensed creative arts therapists.

DESCRIPTION:Hybrid: Virtual and In-Person\nMelting Away Resistance in Eating Disorder Treatment\n \n\nwith Donna Fish\, LCSW-R\nApproved for 2 NYS CE credits \nPatients who come to us with eating disorders initially want change and they are distressed. SUMMARY:Workshop on Fundamentals of Intimate Partner Violence and Domestic Violence w/ NYC Anti-Violence Project
DESCRIPTION:Hybrid: Virtual and In-Person\nIntroduction to Intimate Partner Violence and Domestic Violence\nwith a Special Focus on Its Impact in the Queer Community:\nBest Practices and Clinical Strategies\nPresented by\nAditi Bhattacharya and Kiara Montero Reyes\nNYC Anti-Violence Project\n \nFriday\, October 13\, 2023\, 12:00-3:00pm\nApproved for 3 NYS CE credits \nThe workshop will identify and define violence against Lesbian\, Gay\, Bisexual\, Transgender\, Queer\, and HIV-affected (LGBTQH) communities. We will explore how gender-based violence is a Queer issue and the unique ways that LGBTQH individuals experience violence at the intersection of actual and perceived identities\, including gender identity\, gender expression\, sexual orientation\, HIV status\, race\, ethnicity\, national origin\, language\, ability\, and religion. We will share insights gained from the work the Anti-Violence Project does with clients at intersections of marginalized identities and the systems they navigate at the micro\, mezzo\, and macro levels. The workshop will focus specifically on dynamics of relationship violence that challenge the binary ways of systemic and mainstream understanding of harm. \nWe will outline best practices when interacting with LGBTQH individuals in order to reduce the potential for re-victimization. We will specifically discuss strategies to explore relational dynamics from a harm reductionist and antioppressive framework that is affirming of identity and uplifts the nuances of LGBTQH survivorship and intersectional lived experience. \nAn important note about CEs:\nICP is an approved provider of continuing education credits for social workers\, mental health counselors\, marriage and family therapists\, psychologists and psychoanalysts through the New York Department of Education. In an effort to bridge this gap and give clinicians the working tools to integrate sex therapy into their practices\, this 10 week workshop will highlight:\n \nThe history of sex therapy and the exponentially expanding science of sexuality\nCurrent tools for assessment\, case-formulation and treatment of common sexual issues through a range of different lenses (biological\, psychological\, relational\, intersectional).\nTherapeutic interventions\, including cognitive-behavioral\, psychodynamic\, psychoeducational\, and pharmacological approaches.\nCo-constructing homework assignments with patients that maintain the clinical thread in-between sessions and bring back useful data to keep working with.\nChallenging and deconstructing the limiting beliefs that patients often hold around sex.\n\nIn this 10-week workshop\, you will learn how to: \n\nConnect with your clients around “hard to talk about” sex topics\nIntegrate tools for intervening in common issues such as low desire\, mismatched libido\, arousal and orgasm problems and excessive porn use amongst others\nApply the latest research on spontaneous vs. responsive desire\, arousal non-concordance\, the dual-control model\, core erotic themes and more\n\nThroughout the course\, we will be paying close attention to the development and deepening of the therapeutic alliance and the processing of clinical material that happens both in the room and in between sessions through homework assignments. Case studies will be regularly referenced and discussed. \nBio: \nIan Kerner\, PhD\, LMFT is the co-founder and co-director of the Sex Therapy program at the Institute for Contemporary Psychotherapy. He lectures frequently on topics related to sex and relationships\, with recent presentations for the Psychotherapy Networker Symposium\, the Ackerman Institute\, Tony Robbins\, The Society for Sex Therapy and Research and TED 2021.
