That is\, that transference-countertransference processes are present in most clinical activity\, even when what’s going on seems\nordinary. A case presentation will highlight how analysts and patients engage in these ongoing enactive processes in very brief time frames of seconds to minutes. This seminar will apply and elaborate the themes of the Friday evening lecture on microenactments and the internal world \n\n\nPresenters\n\nStephen Seligman\, DMH is Clinical Professor\, Department of Psychiatry at the University of California\, San Francisco and at the NYU Postdoctoral Program in Psychoanalysis; Training and Supervising Analyst\, San Francisco Center for Psychoanalysis and Psychoanalytic Institute of Northern California. He is the author of Relationships in Development: Infancy\, Intersubjectivity\, Attachment (Routledge\, 2018); co-editor of Infant and Early Childhood Mental Health: Core Concepts and Clinical Practice; and Editor Emeritus of Psychoanalytic Dialogues. Dr. Seligman is the author of over 100 articles\, chapters and reviews\, many of which take up the intersection of infancy\, the infantile and psychoanalytic theory and practice. He has been involved in the development of the original “Fraiberg model” of infant-parent psychotherapy for several decades.\n\n\n\n\nLaura Mackall\, LCSW\, is a psychotherapist in private practice in New York City and a psychoanalytic candidate at the Institute of Contemporary Psychotherapy. She holds an MSW from New York University and a BFA from\nPratt Institute. Previously\, Mackall spent over a decade in leadership roles in the contemporary art world\, a background that informs her interest in creativity\, identity\, and complex organizational dynamics.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nContinuing Education Credits\n\n\nAn important note about CEs: ICP is an approved provider of continuing education credits for social workers\,\nmental health counselors\, marriage and family therapists\, creative arts therapists\, psychologists and psychoanalysts\nthrough the New York Department of Education.\nIf your license is from a different state\, please contact your state’s licensing board to find out if they will accept CE credits for New York State.\nIf your license is from another state\, please enter your license number with your state in parenthesis\, ie 54321 (CA).\nCE certificates will be emailed to you. These interactions can be upsetting and deadening\, enlivening and transformative. But even those that seem “just routine” can disclose much meaning: More often than we realize\, ordinary “technical” choices reflect our participation in enactments that can easily go unnoticed. Relational and object relations theories\, infant observation research\, traditional Freudian concepts will be taken up\, and video of infant-parent interaction will be offered. \n\n\nPresenters\n\nStephen Seligman\, DMH is Clinical Professor\, Department of Psychiatry at the University of California\, San Francisco and at the NYU Postdoctoral Program in Psychoanalysis; Training and Supervising Analyst\, San Francisco Center for Psychoanalysis and Psychoanalytic Institute of Northern California. He has been supervising and teaching there for decades\, focusing on Winnicott\, the British middle school\, and infant research. He is the author\, with Pearl-Ellen Gordon\, of The Mind Object: Precocity and Pathology of Self-Sufficiency (1995). More recently Ed organized and edited Adam Phillips’ The Cure for Psychoanalysis\, which includes essays by members of the ICP community. SUMMARY:Clinical Implications of Intergenerational Trauma
DESCRIPTION:Clinical Implications of Intergenerational Trauma\nwith Irit Felsen\, PhD\nThursday\, October 23\, 2025\n5:30 – 7:30 PM EST\nin person\, at ICP\n(this event won’t be streamed or recorded)\n\n\n2 Continuing Education Credits. \n\nThis is a follow-up to an event that took place earlier this year\, but attendance at the previous event is not required. You’re more than welcome to join us even if you missed part one!\nIn the second part of her presentation about intergenerational transmission of parental/ancestral trauma\, Irit Felsen\, PhD will be focusing on clinical implications for working with individuals from trauma-exposed groups. Recent approaches increasingly recognize the importance of historical trauma and of intergenerational processes as these shape the content and expression of particular psychological themes\, vulnerabilities and resiliencies in the descendants of trauma\, and their responses to current traumatic experiences and reminders of ancestral trauma.  Current wars and catastrophes\, national and international political upheaval\, and the erosion of democratic norms have intensely impacted patients and therapists in recent years and require the capacity to address in therapy the fear and anxiety in response to these national and international affairs\, the impact of these experiences on the therapeutic dyad\, and how both patient and therapist are influenced by legacies of historical trauma.  A trauma-focused framework will be presented\, addressing specific clinical factors and interventions for working with individuals whose presenting problems might also be rooted in intergenerationally transmitted traumatic experiences.  Identifying\, comprehending\, and working with the reverberations of intergenerational transmission of trauma might be critical for adequate treatment\, for symptom reduction and for enhancing patients’ resilience and well-being in trying times. \n\n\nIrit Felsen\, PhD is a clinical psychologist specializing in the effects of trauma and traumatic loss and intergenerational transmission of both trauma and resiliencies in families. \nDr. Felsen is an Adjunct Assistant Professor at Columbia University and had been an assistant professor at Yeshiva University Graduate School of Psychology for 14 years. She obtained her MA in Clinical Psychology at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem\, her PhD the University of Hamburg\, Germany\, and her postdoctoral training at Yale University. Dr. Felsen worked in inpatient and outpatient psychiatric settings\, and since 9/11\, has served on a national emergency response team. Dr. Felsen is a Fellow of Division 56 (Trauma Division) in the APA\, chair of the Trauma Working Group of the NGO on Mental Health in Consultative Relationship with the United Nations\, a member of the National Center for Crisis Management and the American Academy of Experts in Traumatic Stress\, and she was chair of the Work Group on Older Adults in the Interdivision APA Covid-19 Task Force. \nDr. Felsen’s research papers have been published in peer reviewed publications including American Journal of Orthopsychiatry; Psychoanalytic Psychology; Psychoanalysis\, Self and Context; American Journal of Psychiatry; Psychotherapy Research; Psychological Trauma: Theory\, Research\, Practice\, Policy; American Psychology; and others. She has contributed multiple book chapters\, among which a chapter in Charles Figley’s “Pandemic Providers” (2023)\, and a most recent one in “Routledge International Handbook of Multidisciplinary Perspectives on Descendants of Holocaust Survivors” (2024). She maintains a private practice in Englewood\, NJ. Dr. \nFelsen’s art has been featured in art exhibitions in Hamburg\, London\, and was chosen as the emblem of the exhibition of the Arts Council of the Morris Area in 2010. \n\nGeneral Admission: $75\nICP-Affiliated Professionals: $60\nCurrent ICP Therapists: $40\nCurrent Candidate/Graduate or Undergraduate Student: $25\n\nAn important note about CEs: ICP is an approved provider of continuing education credits for social workers\, mental health counselors\, marriage and family therapists\, and psychoanalysts through the New York Department of Education. SUMMARY:In-Person Lecture: Home is a Foreign Place: Immigrant Journeys
DESCRIPTION:SICP In-Person Lecture: \nHome is a Foreign Place: Immigrant Journeys\nwith Shari Appollon\, LCSW\, and Lilly Pavlinovic\, PhD\,\nwith Samanta Batra Mehta\, MS\, as discussant\n  \nThrough an intimate exploration of the immigrant experience\, psychoanalysts Shari Appollon\, LCSW\, and Lilly Pavlinovic\, PhD\, speak to journeys of dislocation and the search for home. Drawing on their clinical work and personal histories\, both speakers delve into the emotional mapping of migration\, examining themes of loss\, longing\, identity-formation and transformation. Shari Appollon’s paper contends with the impact of inter-generational trauma and unconscious elements of melancholia through the voices of her Haitian mother and grandmother and the effects of colonization\, and political and economic instability on their homeland. Lilly Pavlinovic’s paper explores the tender and charged analytic space between the psychoanalyst and her patient against the backdrop of a shared language\, and a shared culture torn apart by war and the traumatic splitting of the former Yugoslavia. The analyst in these papers is a transitional object\, linking past to present. The cocoon of the treatment room is a space to articulate profound loss\, re-configure alienation and reconstruct the irreconcilable in an attempt to suture the wounds of history. \nFriday\, April 25\, 2025\, from 7 to 9 pm\, in person at ICP\n Refreshments and conversation at 9 pm following the lecture\nApproved for 2 NYS CE Credits!\n  \n\nShari Appollon\, LCSW\, is a Haitian-American psychoanalyst\, and a graduate of the National Institute for the Psychotherapies and of the One Year Program at The Stephen Mitchell Relational Study Center. Shari is in private practice in Brooklyn\, NY. \n\nDr. Lilly Pavlinovic\, clinical psychologist and psychoanalyst\, is a graduate of the NYU Postdoctoral Program in Psychotherapy and Psychoanalysis\, She received her PhD in Clinical Psychology from the Derner Institute at Adelphi University\, and her M.A. in Psychoanalytic Studies from the New School. SUMMARY:Historical\, Intergenerational\, and Cultural Transmission of Trauma
DESCRIPTION:Historical\, Intergenerational\, and Cultural Transmission of Trauma\nwith Irit Felsen\, PhD \nThursday\, March 6th\, 2025 6:00 pm-8:00 pm at ICP\nApproved for 2 CE Credits! \n\nIrit Felsen\, Ph.D.\, will be presenting on the intergenerational transmission of parental/ancestral trauma in different groups\, highlighting the most important aspects of these processes; many of which are common and some unique differences. The lecture will focus on empirical research and clinical literature on survivors of the Holocaust and their families\, as this is still the largest body of literature in this field. The research has by now covered the lifespan of survivors and their children\, who are now entering old age\, The mental health professions have not readily accepted the validity of the concept of historical trauma\, and the evidence from Holocaust families has opened the gate for research of historical trauma in other groups\, including the Indigenous nations of America and the descendants of Black slaves in America. \nPotential risks for loss of empathy inherent to the confrontation of trauma therapists with stories of brutality and sadism presented by their patients will be also discussed\, as well as strategies to prevent such emotional biases from interfering with good therapy. \n\nAbout Presenters:  \nIrit Felsen\, Ph.D.\, is a clinical psychologist born in Israel\, living in NY\, specializing in the treatment of trauma and traumatic loss. Her clinical work has focused on Holocaust Survivors and their descendants\, and her research on intergenerational transmission has been published in peer-reviewed journals and book chapters. She taught for 14 years at Ferkauf Graduate School of Psychology and is an Adjunct Professor at Columbia University in NYC\, Co-Chair of the Trauma Work Group at the NGO Committee on Mental Health in Consultative Relationship to the United Nations\, and Chair of the Older Adults Work Group within the Covid-19 APA Interdisciplinary Task Force. \nFor any questions\, including those about accessibility or to request accommodations\, please contact Daniella Ortiz at facts@icpnyc.org.\nAn important note about CEUs: ICP is an approved provider of continuing education credits for social workers\, mental health counselors\, marriage and family therapists\, and psychoanalysts through the New York Department of Education. SUMMARY:It’s Complicated: Navigating Infidelity and Consensual Nonmonogamy in Couple Therapy
DESCRIPTION:It’s Complicated: \nNavigating Infidelity and Consensual Nonmonogamy in Couple Therapy\nwith Jean Malpas\, LMHC-D\, LMFT-D and Michele Scheinkman\, LCSW \nFriday\, February 28th\, 2025 3:00pm-7:00pm at ICP\nApproved for 4 CE Credits! \nAll couples navigate a delicate balance between freedom and loyalty in their relationships. Decisions about sexual fidelity and loyalty\, whether explicit or implicit\, are shaped by each partner’s temperament\, vulnerabilities\, identities\, family legacies\, cultural norms and\, sometimes\, by fractures that arise in the primary relationship. Impasses often evolve in these situations. This workshop integrates Michele Scheinkman’s approach to infidelity\, the Vulnerability Cycle\, and Jean Malpas’ integrative framework on gender and sexual complexity to provide therapists with effective tools for addressing these challenges. Participants will explore key conceptual dimensions and interventions designed to help couples move beyond reactivity toward mutual understanding\, negotiation and deeper connection. Through theoretical presentations\, video demonstrations\, and group discussions\, clinicians will gain: \n\nA non-moralistic understanding of impasses related to monogamy and non-monogamy;\nGreater sensitivity to intersectional factors\, including intrapersonal dynamics\, multigenerational legacies and cultural influences;\nPractical skills to interrupt destructive interactional cycles and work compassionately with both partners to promote repair and agreement.\n\nThe workshop will start by presenting Michele Scheinkman’s Vulnerability Cycle and Multi-Level Approach as well as conceptual and clinical approaches to gender diversity and consensual nonmonogamy in couple therapy. It will review the tenets of intersectional integrative couple therapy\, including the understanding of individual and couple’s dilemmas through the lenses of familial\, contextual and cultural experiences of self\, relationship\, belonging and inclusion. A couple of case vignettes will be presented through hybrid case summary and videos\, emphasizing effectively dealing with affairs\, desire inside and outside the relationships\, as well as exploration of non-monogamous arrangements. The clinical material will be used to demonstrate the therapeutic frameworks as well as specific couple therapy skills\, including tracking a vulnerability cycle\, identifying intrapsychic conflicts and motivations as well as the impact of sociocultural dynamics on the couple’s impasse and dilemmas. \n  \nAbout Presenters:  \nJean Malpas\, LMHC-D\, LMFT-D\, is a queer-identified psychotherapist and trainer in private practice in New York City. He founded of the Gender & Family Project at the Ackerman Institute for the Family and co-founded the Couples & Intimacy Project with Peggy Papp and Michele Scheinkman. Jean has presented nationally and internationally on topics of gender\, sexuality\, couples and nonmonogamy for the past 20 years. His work with lesbian\, gay\, bisexual\, transgender and nonbinary individuals\, couples\, and families has been featured in numerous books\, journals and media appearances\, including the TEDx Talk “The Gift of Gender Authenticity.” Jean’s work has been recognized by the Stonewall Community Foundation 2016 Visionary Award and the American Family Therapy Academy Social Justice 2018 Award. \n  \nMichele Scheinkman\, L.C.S.W.\, is a faculty member at the Ackerman Institute for the Family where she founded the Couples & Intimacy Project with Peggy Papp and Jean Malpas. She is a private practitioner in Manhattan where she offers individual\, couple\, and family therapy in English and Portuguese. Michele has taught couples and family therapy for over 40 years in the United States\, Latin America\, Europe and Asia. During her years in Chicago she was Director of Couples Therapy Training at the Chicago Center for Family Health and a faculty member of the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Chicago. Michele has written extensively about couple therapy on topics of impasses\, infidelity\, intimacy\, jealousy and sexuality. Her work has been recognized by the American Family Therapy Academy with the Innovative Contribution to Family Therapy Award in 2018. SUMMARY:In-Person Lecture: Risking Intimacy and Creative Transformation in Psychoanalysis\, Lauren Levine\, PhD
DESCRIPTION:In-Person Lecture: Risking Intimacy and Creative Transformation in Psychoanalysis\, \nLauren Levine\, PhD \n \nIn this presentation\, I will consider the transformative power of stories to create shared symbolic meaning and coherence out of ungrieved trauma. Through evocative clinical stories\, I’ll explore creativity as transformative\, emergent in the clinical process\, drawing on film\, dance\, and dreams as frames for experience exceeding what words alone can capture. In analysis\, we dwell in stories\, in associations\, echoes and reverberations. Apres coup. In the enigmatic and ineffable. As an analyst and writer\, I’m interested in the stories we tell\, individually and collectively\, the interstitial gaps created by unmetabolized trauma\, and the potential for an intimate psychoanalytic process to help patients reclaim their memory and creative agency and become the storyteller of their own lives. \n  \nFriday\, January 24\, 2025\, from 7 to 9 pm\, in person at ICP\n Refreshments and conversation at 9 pm following the lecture\nApproved for 2 NYS CE Credits!\n\nDr. Lauren Levine is Joint Editor-in-Chief of Psychoanalytic Dialogues. Her book\, Risking Intimacy and Creative Transformation in Psychoanalysis\, was published by Routledge in April 2023. Lauren teaches and presents both nationally and internationally\, and has published articles about creativity\, mourning\, intergenerational and relational trauma\, and resilience. SUMMARY:In-Person Lecture: The Gendered Body as Home: Two Analysts’ Journeys “Coming Out” to Their Patients
DESCRIPTION:The Gendered Body as Home:\nTwo Analysts’ Journeys “Coming Out” to Their Patients\n \nwith Gabriel DeCicco\, LCSW-R and\nBalin Anderson\, LCSW with\nSandra Silverman as discussant\nFriday\, November 15th\, 2024 7pm-9pm\nRefreshments and conversation at 9 following the lecture\n  \nApproved for 2 NYS CE Credits!\nTogether\, Gabriel DeCicco\, LCSW and Balin Anderson\, LCSW explore the clinical impacts of an analyst’s pregnancy and an analyst’s gender transition; the attendant body changes impact treatment in significant ways. Transitioning to a congruent gender identity or choosing to gestate brings a therapist face to face with their own embodiment; heightened attention to embodiment saturates the therapeutic dyad. A pregnant body is home to the growing baby; a pregnant person grapples with feeling at home with oneself alongside unprecedented changes. A gender transition reflects an effort to come home to one’s body; to belong within the contours of one’s own body. Balin and Gabriel will highlight the interplay of gender\, sexuality\, and identity inherent in these embodied gestational experiences – that of the analyst giving birth and of the analyst being re-born. \nAbout the Presenters: \nGabriel DeCicco\, LCSW-R is a transgender psychoanalyst who has worked in the field of mental health for 20 years. He has an MSW from NYU School of Social Work and is a graduate of both the Psychodynamic Psychotherapy Program and the Psychoanalytic Program at ICP. He was a Clinical Assistant Professor at NYU Langone Medical Center from 2008 to 2015. He is the President of DeCicco Psychotherapy & Consulting\, LLC\, and has a full-time private practice in Manhattan\, where he sees patients both in-person and virtually in the tri-state area. \nBalin Anderson\, LCSW\nA psychoanalyst in private practice in Denver\, Colorado\, Balin Anderson LCSW is a graduate of the ICP’s Psychoanalytic Program. She earned her MSW from the George Warren Brown School of Social Work at Washington University in St. Louis\, Missouri. Balin began her career as a social worker at Planned Parenthood of New York City; she also served as a medical interpreter for Spanish-speaking patients. Balin is a faculty member at the Denver Institute for Psychoanalysis. \nSandra Silverman\, LCSW\n \nSandra Silverman LCSW is faculty and supervisor at ICP\, NIP\, and the Stephen Mitchell Center for Relational Studies where she is also co-chair of the committee on Diversity\, Equity\, and Inclusion. Sandra is an associate editor of Psychoanalytic Dialogues.
