These interactions can be upsetting and deadening\, enlivening and transformative. But even those that seem “just routine” can disclose much meaning: More often than we realize\, ordinary “technical” choices reflect our participation in enactments that can easily go unnoticed. Relational and object relations theories\, infant observation research\, traditional Freudian concepts will be taken up\, and video of infant-parent interaction will be offered. \n\n\nPresenters\n\nStephen Seligman\, DMH is Clinical Professor\, Department of Psychiatry at the University of California\, San Francisco and at the NYU Postdoctoral Program in Psychoanalysis; Training and Supervising Analyst\, San Francisco Center for Psychoanalysis and Psychoanalytic Institute of Northern California. SUMMARY:In-Person Lecture: Home is a Foreign Place: Immigrant Journeys
DESCRIPTION:SICP In-Person Lecture: \nHome is a Foreign Place: Immigrant Journeys\nwith Shari Appollon\, LCSW\, and Lilly Pavlinovic\, PhD\,\nwith Samanta Batra Mehta\, MS\, as discussant\n  \nThrough an intimate exploration of the immigrant experience\, psychoanalysts Shari Appollon\, LCSW\, and Lilly Pavlinovic\, PhD\, speak to journeys of dislocation and the search for home. Drawing on their clinical work and personal histories\, both speakers delve into the emotional mapping of migration\, examining themes of loss\, longing\, identity-formation and transformation. Shari Appollon’s paper contends with the impact of inter-generational trauma and unconscious elements of melancholia through the voices of her Haitian mother and grandmother and the effects of colonization\, and political and economic instability on their homeland. Lilly Pavlinovic’s paper explores the tender and charged analytic space between the psychoanalyst and her patient against the backdrop of a shared language\, and a shared culture torn apart by war and the traumatic splitting of the former Yugoslavia. The analyst in these papers is a transitional object\, linking past to present. The cocoon of the treatment room is a space to articulate profound loss\, re-configure alienation and reconstruct the irreconcilable in an attempt to suture the wounds of history. \nFriday\, April 25\, 2025\, from 7 to 9 pm\, in person at ICP\n Refreshments and conversation at 9 pm following the lecture\nApproved for 2 NYS CE Credits!\n  \n\nShari Appollon\, LCSW\, is a Haitian-American psychoanalyst\, and a graduate of the National Institute for the Psychotherapies and of the One Year Program at The Stephen Mitchell Relational Study Center. SUMMARY:In-Person Lecture: Risking Intimacy and Creative Transformation in Psychoanalysis\, Lauren Levine\, PhD
DESCRIPTION:In-Person Lecture: Risking Intimacy and Creative Transformation in Psychoanalysis\, \nLauren Levine\, PhD \n \nIn this presentation\, I will consider the transformative power of stories to create shared symbolic meaning and coherence out of ungrieved trauma. Through evocative clinical stories\, I’ll explore creativity as transformative\, emergent in the clinical process\, drawing on film\, dance\, and dreams as frames for experience exceeding what words alone can capture. In analysis\, we dwell in stories\, in associations\, echoes and reverberations. Apres coup. In the enigmatic and ineffable. As an analyst and writer\, I’m interested in the stories we tell\, individually and collectively\, the interstitial gaps created by unmetabolized trauma\, and the potential for an intimate psychoanalytic process to help patients reclaim their memory and creative agency and become the storyteller of their own lives. \n  \nFriday\, January 24\, 2025\, from 7 to 9 pm\, in person at ICP\n Refreshments and conversation at 9 pm following the lecture\nApproved for 2 NYS CE Credits!\n\nDr. Lauren Levine is Joint Editor-in-Chief of Psychoanalytic Dialogues. Her book\, Risking Intimacy and Creative Transformation in Psychoanalysis\, was published by Routledge in April 2023. She is on the Faculty of NYU Postdoctoral Program in Psychoanalysis\, and The Stephen Mitchell Relational Study Center\, where she’s former Co-Director of the One Year Program in Relational Studies. Transitioning to a congruent gender identity or choosing to gestate brings a therapist face to face with their own embodiment; heightened attention to embodiment saturates the therapeutic dyad. A pregnant body is home to the growing baby; a pregnant person grapples with feeling at home with oneself alongside unprecedented changes. A gender transition reflects an effort to come home to one’s body; to belong within the contours of one’s own body. Balin and Gabriel will highlight the interplay of gender\, sexuality\, and identity inherent in these embodied gestational experiences – that of the analyst giving birth and of the analyst being re-born. \nAbout the Presenters: \nGabriel DeCicco\, LCSW-R is a transgender psychoanalyst who has worked in the field of mental health for 20 years. SUMMARY:SOLD OUT: In-Person Lecture: Enactment: Its Provocation by the Analyst
DESCRIPTION:The event has been sold out\, if you’d like to be placed on the waitlist\, please email SICP@icpnyc.org. \nEnactment: Its Provocation by the Analyst\n \nwith Robert Grossmark\, PhD\nFriday\, October 18th\, 2024 7pm-9pm\nRefreshments and conversation at 9 following the lecture \n  \nApproved for 2 NYS CE Credits!\nThis presentation will address challenges when working with patients whose trauma and neglect are not available for symbolization and mentalization. I suggest that the analytic relationship offers a unique situation that – following Laplanche – provokes enactments in which the unsymbolized and unrepresented can speak in their own idiom. Rather than seeking to understand and get out of enactments\, the analyst can unobtrusively companion the patient in states of fragmentation\, disorganization and non-relatedness and thus make space for early and inchoate trauma to speak. Enactment is thus regarded as an “untelling” of what has been trapped in the “unpast” (Scarfone) of continual painful repetition. When the analyst can companion the patient in the emergence of early\, wordless enactments and psychic spaces\, old and constraining “translations” are transformed\, pain that has never been suffered can finally be known by and with an Other\, and time\, self and relatedness are reconstituted. \n  \nAbout the Presenter: \nRobert Grossmark\, PhD\n \nRobert Grossmark\, Ph.D\, ABPP is a psychoanalyst in New York City. SUMMARY:In-Person Lecture: Expanding Dissociation Informed Psychoanalytic Practice: How to make conceptual sense of Not-me\, No-me\, & Many mes
DESCRIPTION:The SICP Friday Night Lecture Series Returns! Featuring In-Person events.\nExpanding Dissociation Informed Psychoanalytic Practice:\nHow to make conceptual sense of Not-me\, No-me\, & Many mes\n\nwith Johanna Dobrich\, LCSW\nFriday\, May 17th\, 2024 7:00-9:00pm in-person at ICP\n\n  \nApproved for 2 NYS CE Credits!\nIn recent years\, psychoanalysis has undergone a transformation away from an exclusive focus on repressive symptomatology to include dissociative symptomatology. Howell/Itkowitz’s dissociative unconscious\, Bollas’ unthought known\, Stern’s unformulated experience\, and my own unexperienced-experience\, regularly appear as constructs in both our theoretical and clinical formulations. Yet there remains a lot of ambiguity about the differences between defensive and ordinary dissociation and the varied forms defensive dissociation in particular may take. Many times\, people confuse dissociation as a defense from dissociation as a structure of the self. Taking Sullivan’s understanding of the self as a system\, I propose a continuum in which defensive dissociation may occur ranging from a more or less continuous self-system all the way up to a discontinuous self-system. I describe the difference between the ‘dissociation of content’ from ‘dissociation as a structure of the self\,’ highlighting clinical phenomena people may come to recognize in their practice. I go on to elaborate on some of the structural features of ‘dissociation as a structure of the self ’ and offer clinical examples. \nAbout Presenter:\n \nJohanna Dobrich is a licensed clinical social worker and graduate of ICP’s four-year psychoanalytic training program. She is on the Faculty at the ICP\, the Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy Study Center\, and the National Institute for the Psychotherapies\, where she teaches courses on trauma\, dissociation\, and contemporary psychoanalytic practice from a Relational perspective\, as well as supervises candidates in training. She is the author of the book “Working with Survivor Siblings in Psychoanalysis” for which she received the 2023 Sandor Ferenczi Award from the International Society for the Study of Trauma and Dissociation\, and has authored numerous articles on dissociation\, loss and mourning. Johanna is in private practice in New York\, NY. \nFor any questions\, including those about accessibility\, or to request accommodations please contact Maeve Hanley at SICP@icpnyc.org. \nAn important note about CEUs: ICP is an approved provider of continuing education credits for social workers\, mental health counselors\, marriage and family therapists\, and psychoanalysts through the New York Department of Education.
