DESCRIPTION:Somewhere Over the Rainbow: Harm Reduction & Recovery in LGBTQIA+ Communities with Giorgio Handman\, LCSW\nOctober 8\, 15\, 22 & 29\, 2025 from 6pm-8pm on Zoom\n8 NYS CE Credits! \nHarm Reduction is an essential practice for all social workers\, especially amidst an ongoing overdose crisis. increasing inequities\, and widespread misunderstanding of substance use and mental health issues. Within the LGBTQAI community substance use is amplified by higher rates of use\, which require specifically attuned harm reduction approaches. It is imperative for social workers to have a clear framework to support themselves and those they work with. This workshop will provide participants with a familiarity and understanding of the core principles of the Harm Reduction Model. Through experiential learning that will incorporate role plays\, dialogue\, and an overview of harm reduction principles\, participants will begin/continue to learn how to apply a harm reduction lens to their clinical work within the LGBTQIA community. This workshop will also explore and discuss complementary interventions that support harm reduction work in practice. There will be an opportunity for participants to share case examples\, engage in teaching/learning and receive peer support/feedback. Participants should come prepared for an interactive workshop that will invite you to self-reflect\, engage in partner shares\, and larger group practices. \nAbout the Presenter: \n\n\n\nGiorgio Handman is a social worker\, artist\, and a lover of harm reduction. He graduated from The Silberman School of Social Work in 2012. Giorgio completed a mindfulness facilitator training at the Engaged Mindfulness Institute and has incorporated mindfulness into his social work practice and harm reduction work with young people experiencing homelessness\, veterans\, people living with HIV/AIDS\, and individuals navigating substance use and currently practices harm reduction at the REACH clinic at Mount Sinai. Giorgio provides harm reduction trainings at hospitals\, shelters\, social work schools and social service agencies from New York to Australia. Giorgio is committed to working in community to promote wellness\, joy and harmony. \n\n\n\n\nRegistration for this course has closed.  \n\n

Participants will gain valuable insights into different types of sexual abuse\, prevalent diagnoses\, and effective therapeutic approaches and techniques for supporting survivors of CSA in a clinical setting. By attending this workshop\, professionals will enhance their understanding and skills in providing compassionate and effective care for survivors of CSA. \nAbout the Presenter: \nDr. Edwards is a sexual trauma therapist.She specializes in the treatment of suicidal survivors of childhood sexual abuse.\n \nDr. Edwards is the Director of the NYU Silver School of Social Work Advanced Clinical Practice Post-Masters Program.  She is also an Adjunct Lecturer at the NYU Silver School of Social Work\, and faculty at the National Institute for the Psychotherapies Child and Adolescent Trauma Program\, and the Integrative Trauma Program. DESCRIPTION:Postponed\nLGBTQ History: Then & Now\nwith Gary Jacobson\, LCSW\, Kathleen Miller\, MFA\, LCSW\, & Anna Kramarsky\, PhD\nFridays: April 12\, 19\, 26\, May 3\, 10\, and 17 2024\n12:30pm-2:00pm at ICP\nThis course will provide an overview of contemporary LGBTQ experience\, owning the historical progress that has come to pass\, while also exploring the impact of more current events and concerns. For example\, while the AIDS epidemic shaped the experience of LGBTQ identified baby boomers\, how is Pre-exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP) impacting Gen Z youth and millennial young adults? Has there been a generational loss of information now that the Zeitgeist is greater acceptance and rights for the LGBTQ community\, and if so\, how does it and will it impact future generations? And perhaps most pressing\, what impact has the Covid-19 Pandemic and its cascading effects had on those who identify as LGBTQ? How have these effects been either mitigated or exacerbated by  other intersecting aspects of identity such as race\, class\, immigration and dis/ability (to name only a few)?  \nThese questions and more will be addressed over the course of 6 weeks\, through a combination of readings\, film and discussion. Together\, we will take a look back at the history of LGBTQ affirmative psychotherapy\, the racialized history of our current terms ‘gender’ and ‘sexuality\,’ and the experiences of various LGBTQ communities in relation to the AIDS epidemic.
