SUMMARY:Notes of Hope: Expanding Access to Mental Health Care
DESCRIPTION:Please join us on Thursday\, April 10th\, for a special evening in support of ICP’s ongoing mission to expand access to mental health care. The internationally acclaimed duo Kennedy Administration will perform two sets featuring powerhouse vocalist Kennedy and her musical partner Ondre J. The venue\, a dramatic photo studio in downtown Manhattan\, is easily accessible by car service or subway. Crafted cocktails\, wines and non-alcoholic beverages will be served with light fare. The evening begins at 7 PM\, with the first set at 8 PM\, followed by a twenty-minute intermission. \nIf you cannot attend\, you can also support ICP’s mission through one of four donation options below. \nICP is a registered 501(c)(3) non-profit. 100% of the proceeds from this event will support patient care. For tax purposes\, $100 of each $150 ticket and $75 of each $125 ticket is deductible. Consideration will be given to balancing the individual’s right to self-determination with concern for public health and safety. \nThe presentation will cover the ways to assess the levels of self-neglect and imminent risk\, and how to develop a harm reduction approach and plan of care with interdisciplinary collaboration. DESCRIPTION:Cultivating Change:\nCase Studies Illustrating the Use of Multiple Lenses in Engaging Substance-Using Clients\nwith Jen Levy\, Ph.D\, Sonya Lazarevic\, MD\, and Nicole Kosanke\, Ph.D \n\nSaturday\, October 26th\, 2024 10am-2:45pm on Zoom\nApproved for 4.5 CE Credits! \n\nThis is an interactive\, multi-presenter day of programming for clinicians working with individuals and families with substance use challenges. This workshop will provide the essentials of a harm reduction/mindfulness approach with Jen Levy\, Ph.D.\, how to use addiction and functional medicine with Sonya Lazarevic\, MD\, and treatment approaches for families and loved ones of those impacted by substance use issues with Nicole Kosanke\, Ph.D. \nAddressing Addictive Issues from a Harm Reduction Framework \nFollowing an overview of the current status of the addiction treatment field\, there will be a discussion of a harm reduction-informed approach that encompasses a range of positive change goals. Case presentations will address both the underlying meaning and function of addictive issues\, along with offering mindfulness-based skills to support the change process. The impact of trauma on the development and treatment of addictive issues will be explored as well. Participants will learn practical skills to work with cravings and reduce risk through guided practices that can be applied in a range of clinical settings. \nConventional and Integrative Approaches in Addiction Psychiatry \nThe discussion will outline medications prescribed in stages of use\, from abstinence to harm reduction\, focusing on the most common substances of use. An integrative approach will be mapped out\, including layers of care from a functional and regenerative approach. Psychotherapists’ role as critical pieces in front-line engagement will be explored. A case example will be used to encourage an interactive discussion. \nThe Invitation To Change Approach: How to Help a Loved One Change \nBeing in a close relationship with someone who is using substances is often stressful and confusing. Outlining the Invitation to Change approach will highlight three major areas of research-based strategies for having a positive impact on a loved one: 1) understanding motivation and the change process in a constructive way\, 2) using positive reinforcement and effective communication tools\, and 3) practicing skills of self-awareness/compassion. Participants will learn practical applications within these categories for how clients can take care of themselves while also influencing a loved one in positive ways. \nAbout Presenter:  \nJenifer Levy\, Ph.D.\, is a licensed psychologist with a private practice in New York and New Jersey.\nDr. Levy specializes in the treatment of addictive issues and trauma from a harm reduction framework that is collaborative\, compassionate\, and non-judgmental. Dr. Levy obtained her Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from Virginia Tech and completed her internship and post-doctoral fellowship at Princeton House Behavioral Health. She previously worked as the Assistant Director of The Center for Optimal Living\, an outpatient private practice in NYC\, where she coordinated clinical services and training activities along with providing psychotherapy. She also taught and supervised graduate students in psychology as the Assistant Director of the Concentration in Mental Health and Substance Abuse Counseling at The New School for Social Research. Prior to that\, she was a Supervising Psychologist at the Women’s Health Project at St. Luke’s-Roosevelt Hospital in NYC. \nIn addition to offering psychotherapy services\, Dr. Levy facilitates trainings on a range of topics related to addictive issues\, harm reduction\, mindfulness approaches\, and working with trauma survivors. \nSonya Lazarevic\, MD\, is a general\, addiction\, and integrative psychiatrist with a private practice in New York and Connecticut. She began her career as a clinical social worker in the ’90’s. In the mid-2000’s she attended St. George’s University Medical School and subsequently completed fellowships in\naddiction psychiatry at NYU and integrative medicine at the University of Arizona. Currently\, she is deepening her clinical practice to include functional and regenerative medicine approaches and complements care with essential oils. Since college\, she’s maintained a regular meditation/yoga practice and trained in various holistic disciplines. \nDr. Nicole Kosanke is a licensed clinical psychologist with 20+ years of experience treating substance use disorders in individuals and families. Dr. Kosanke utilizes the principles of ITC (Invitation to Change)\, motivational interviewing\, and cognitive behavioral therapy in different therapeutic modalities and resources: group\, individual\, family\, video training\, and written materials. She co-authored the book\, Beyond Addiction: How Science and Kindness Help People Change\, which is a compassionate and science-based family guide for navigating the addiction treatment world\, understanding motivation\, and using CRAFT skills. Dr. Kosanke also serves as a consulting psychologist and trainer for CMC:FFC\, a nonprofit organization providing evidence-based skills training to family members who have a loved one struggling with substance use issues. But very little is written or taught about how we can prepare and use our instrument in session\, moment-to-moment\, with each client–particularly in terms of our implicit/ non-verbal communication as it transmits through our eyes\, faces\, bodies\, and voices.  The more aware we are of our unique instrument and how we use it\, the more ethical our clinical practice will be with each unique person who seeks our help. \nUtilizing his experience as both an actor and a therapist\, Mark O’Connell will offer you ways to prepare and to use your instrument with awareness\, responsiveness\, authenticity\, intentionality\, versatility\, responsibility\, and self-care. DESCRIPTION:Hybrid: Virtual and In-Person\nIntroduction to Intimate Partner Violence and Domestic Violence\nwith a Special Focus on Its Impact in the Queer Community:\nBest Practices and Clinical Strategies\nPresented by\nAditi Bhattacharya and Kiara Montero Reyes\nNYC Anti-Violence Project\n \nFriday\, October 13\, 2023\, 12:00-3:00pm\nApproved for 3 NYS CE credits \nThe workshop will identify and define violence against Lesbian\, Gay\, Bisexual\, Transgender\, Queer\, and HIV-affected (LGBTQH) communities. We will explore how gender-based violence is a Queer issue and the unique ways that LGBTQH individuals experience violence at the intersection of actual and perceived identities\, including gender identity\, gender expression\, sexual orientation\, HIV status\, race\, ethnicity\, national origin\, language\, ability\, and religion. We will share insights gained from the work the Anti-Violence Project does with clients at intersections of marginalized identities and the systems they navigate at the micro\, mezzo\, and macro levels. The workshop will focus specifically on dynamics of relationship violence that challenge the binary ways of systemic and mainstream understanding of harm. \nWe will outline best practices when interacting with LGBTQH individuals in order to reduce the potential for re-victimization. We will specifically discuss strategies to explore relational dynamics from a harm reductionist and antioppressive framework that is affirming of identity and uplifts the nuances of LGBTQH survivorship and intersectional lived experience. \nAn important note about CEs:\nICP is an approved provider of continuing education credits for social workers\, mental health counselors\, marriage and family therapists\, psychologists and psychoanalysts through the New York Department of Education. DESCRIPTION:Workshop: The Elephant not in the Room:\nWill Psychoanalysis Survive the Screen?\nwith Leora Trub\, PhD and Joyce Slochower\, PhD\n  \nDon’t miss out on this 2 NYS CE Credit virtual talk on Thursday\, September 28th from 7pm-9pm on Zoom with Leora Trub\, PhD and Joyce Slochower\, PhD \nUntil Covid upended the psychoanalytic frame as we knew it\, most of us assumed that the therapeutic process required that analysts’ and patients’ bodies occupy the same physical space. While Covid forced us to abandon these assumptions\, we anticipated\, even yearned for the day when we could return to in-person work. \nToday we’re in a gray zone. To mask or not to mask? To remain remote or risk exposure? While these decisions in part are informed by clinical considerations\, our personal necessities are likely also implicated. Do we rationalize when we declare remote therapy equivalent (or nearly equivalent) to in-person work? Do we minimize the health risk to ourselves and our patients when we return to an in-person model? In this talk we invite you to interrogate the factors—conscious or not—that inform our use (or rejection) of remote work. We also aim to explore the short- and long-term implications of working through a screen for the psychoanalytic field as a whole. \nLeora Trub\, a clinical psychologist\, has written extensively on these issues. She runs the Digital Media and Psychology lab at Pace University where she investigates how technologies affect our conceptions of ourselves and our relationships with others. \nJoyce Slochower will act as facilitator and discussant. \nPresenter – Leora Trub\, PhD \nLeora Trub\, Ph.D.\, is Associate Professor at Pace University’s doctoral program in School/Clinical-Child Psychology\, and has a private practice in New York City\, where she treats adolescents\, adults and couples. Her primary research interest is the study of identity development\, relationship formation and psychological well-being in the age of technology\, and the implications of digital technology on clinical practice. She is the author of numerous papers and chapters on clinical practice in the digital age\, and the relationship between technology and psychological constructs including attachment\, emotional regulation\, intimacy\, self-presentation and mindfulness. Her research has been published in a range of research\, clinical\, and psychoanalytic journals. It has also been reported on in various news outlets\, including the New York Times. \nDiscussant – Joyce Slochower\, PhD\, ABPP \nJoyce Slochower Ph.D.\, ABPP\, is Professor Emerita of Psychology at Hunter College & the Graduate Center\, CUNY. Joyce is faculty and supervisor at the NYU Postdoctoral Program\, the Steven Mitchell Center\, the National Training Program of NIP (all in New York)\, Philadelphia Center for Relational Studies in Philadelphia and the Psychoanalytic Institute of Northern California in San Francisco. She is on the Editorial Boards of Psychoanalytic Dialogues\, Journal of the American Psychoanalytic Association\, Ricerca Psicoanalitica and Psychoanalytic Perspectives and is on the Board of the IARPP. Joyce has published over 100 articles on various aspects of psychoanalytic theory and technique. Second Editions of her two books\, Holding and Psychoanalysis: A Relational Perspective (1996) and Psychoanalytic Collisions (2006)\, were released in 2014 by Routledge. She is co-Editor\, with Lew Aron and Sue Grand\, of “De-idealizing relational theory: a Critique from within” and “Decentering Relational Theory: A Comparative Critique (2018\, Routledge). Her forthcoming book\, Elephants Under the Couch: Psychoanalysis and the Unspoken\, is in press with Karnac.
