Over the course of this lecure\, Dr. Rubin will provide a bio-psycho-social toolbox for creating satisfied clients\, including: \n\nExplaining the signs and symptoms of genitourinary syndrome of menopause (GSM)\, a relatively new term that describes various menopausal symptoms and signs\, including genital symptoms\, sexual symptoms\, and also urinary symptoms.\nDiscussing the safety of vaginal hormones and\nDiscussing the importance of treating GSM in helping sexual and urinary health for menopausal women\n\nDr. Rachel Rubin is a board-certified urologist and sexual medicine specialist. She is an assistant clinical professor of Urology at Georgetown University and owns her private practice in the Washington DC region. She is one of only a handful of physicians fellowship trained in male and female sexual medicine. Dr. Rubin is a clinician\, researcher\, and vocal educator in the field of sexual medicine. She completed her medical and undergraduate training at Tufts University\, her urology training at Georgetown University\, and her fellowship training under Dr. Irwin Goldstein in San Diego. In addition to being education chair for the International Society for the Study of Women’s Sexual Health (ISSWSH)\, she also serves as an Associate Editor for the Journal Sexual Medicine Reviews. Her work has been featured in the NYT\, PBS and NPR. \nThis program will meet AASECT Core Knowledge Area H. Psych\n  \nWednesday\, January 31\, 2024; 7:00pm-9:00pm on Zoom\nThis event will be approved for 2 NYS and 2 AASECT CE credits \nAsexuality is characterized by a persistent lack of sexual attraction\, and asexuality is often an intrinsic part of an individual’s identity. Asexual people\, often referred to as “aces\,” may have romantic feelings and the spectrum of asexuality includes various identities and differing levels of interest in sexual activity. \nThis presentation delves into the understanding and incorporation of asexual identities in clinical practice\, aiming to enhance practitioners’ competency in addressing the unique needs of asexual individuals and their partners. It begins by defining asexuality\, challenging common misconceptions\, and highlighting the diversity within the asexual community. The talk emphasizes the importance of differentiating asexuality from other conditions\, such as hypoactive sexual desire disorder\, and the implications for misdiagnosis and treatment. \nCase studies and interactive discussions will facilitate a deeper understanding of how to support asexual individuals through informed\, empathetic\, and tailored care. By the end of this session\, participants will be equipped with practical tools and insights to navigate asexuality in their clinical work. \nAbout the presenter: \nDr. Morag Yule received her PhD in clinical psychology from the University of British Columbia (UBC) and completed her clinical residency at the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH) in Toronto. She is the founder and director of Ontario Sex Therapy\, a private practice in Toronto. Dr. Yule has been involved in sex research since 2005 and been providing psychotherapy and assessments for sexual difficulties since 2010. \nShe has published and presented widely in sexuality and was awarded multiple academic honours and awards throughout her graduate training. Dr. Yule is especially recognized for her ground-breaking studies of asexuality and its assessment. \nDr. Yule provides psychological services for a broad range of sexual issues. She has extensive training and experience treating sexual dysfunction\, including problems with sexual desire\, difficulty experiencing sexual arousal and orgasm\, and sexual pain. She also works with those exploring sexual identity\, struggling with hypersexuality/out of control sexual behavior\, navigating atypical/unique sexual interests\, and moving past difficult sexual experiences and sexual trauma. In addition to her specialization in treating sexual difficulties\, has a particular focus on treating OCD with sexuality-related themes such as pedophilia OCD (POCD) and sexual orientation OCD (SO-OCD). She works with both individuals and couples and people of all genders and sexual orientations. \nDr. Yule is President of the Society for Sex Therapy and Research (SSTAR). DESCRIPTION:Virtual Workshop:\nThe Sexually Well-Informed Clinician: Principles & Practices of Sex Therapy\nIan Kerner\, PhD\, LMFT\n \n10 Fridays: September 22\, 29\, October 6\, 20\, 27\, November 3\, 10\, 17\, December 1\, 8\, 15* & 22*\, 2023 from 9:30AM-11:30AM on Zoom\n\n20 NYS and AASECT CE Credits\n*This is a 10 week-course with two extra dates reserved at the end in case of a class cancellation. \nSexuality and its expression are central to life\, yet it’s not uncommon for both client and therapist to collude in avoiding sex-related issues due to mutual discomfort.  In an effort to bridge this gap and give clinicians the working tools to integrate sex therapy into their practices\, this 10 week workshop will highlight:\n \nThe history of sex therapy and the exponentially expanding science of sexuality\nCurrent tools for assessment\, case-formulation and treatment of common sexual issues through a range of different lenses (biological\, psychological\, relational\, intersectional).\nTherapeutic interventions\, including cognitive-behavioral\, psychodynamic\, psychoeducational\, and pharmacological approaches.\nCo-constructing homework assignments with patients that maintain the clinical thread in-between sessions and bring back useful data to keep working with.\nChallenging and deconstructing the limiting beliefs that patients often hold around sex.\n\nIn this 10-week workshop\, you will learn how to: \n\nConnect with your clients around “hard to talk about” sex topics\nIntegrate tools for intervening in common issues such as low desire\, mismatched libido\, arousal and orgasm problems and excessive porn use amongst others\nApply the latest research on spontaneous vs. responsive desire\, arousal non-concordance\, the dual-control model\, core erotic themes and more\n\nThroughout the course\, we will be paying close attention to the development and deepening of the therapeutic alliance and the processing of clinical material that happens both in the room and in between sessions through homework assignments. Case studies will be regularly referenced and discussed. \nBio: \nIan Kerner\, PhD\, LMFT is the co-founder and co-director of the Sex Therapy program at the Institute for Contemporary Psychotherapy. He lectures frequently on topics related to sex and relationships\, with recent presentations for the Psychotherapy Networker Symposium\, the Ackerman Institute\, Tony Robbins\, The Society for Sex Therapy and Research and TED 2021. He is a regular contributor to CNN on the topic sexuality and relationships.
