SUMMARY:Notes of Hope: Expanding Access to Mental Health Care
DESCRIPTION:Please join us on Thursday\, April 10th\, for a special evening in support of ICP’s ongoing mission to expand access to mental health care. The internationally acclaimed duo Kennedy Administration will perform two sets featuring powerhouse vocalist Kennedy and her musical partner Ondre J. The venue\, a dramatic photo studio in downtown Manhattan\, is easily accessible by car service or subway. Crafted cocktails\, wines and non-alcoholic beverages will be served with light fare. The evening begins at 7 PM\, with the first set at 8 PM\, followed by a twenty-minute intermission. \nIf you cannot attend\, you can also support ICP’s mission through one of four donation options below. \nICP is a registered 501(c)(3) non-profit. 100% of the proceeds from this event will support patient care. For tax purposes\, $100 of each $150 ticket and $75 of each $125 ticket is deductible. All direct donations are fully tax deductible. \nNotes of Hope Registration \n\nAbout ICP \nFounded in 1971\, the Institute for Contemporary Psychotherapy is one of NYC’s oldest and largest non-profit mental health training and treatment facilities. Each year\, our 100+ certificate candidates serve thousands of patients throughout their careers. \nAbout the Kennedy Administration duo \nKennedy Administration\, a dynamic soul-funk-jazz duo from New York City\, pairs powerhouse vocalist Kennedy with Czech-born keyboardist Ondre J\, a longtime collaborator of Grammy-winner Gregory Porter. Since 2015\, they’ve maintained a Greenwich Village residency while selling out performances across Europe\, Russia\, and Asia\, including opening for Elton John. Their two albums showcase original material blending jazz\, R&B\, hip-hop\, and pop elements. The pair delivers performances with crackling intensity for both intimate venues and festival crowds of 20\,000\, creating a sophisticated and joyful sonic experience.

DESCRIPTION:Historical\, Intergenerational\, and Cultural Transmission of Trauma\nwith Irit Felsen\, PhD \nThursday\, March 6th\, 2025 6:00 pm-8:00 pm at ICP\nApproved for 2 CE Credits! \n\nIrit Felsen\, Ph.D.\, will be presenting on the intergenerational transmission of parental/ancestral trauma in different groups\, highlighting the most important aspects of these processes; many of which are common and some unique differences. The lecture will focus on empirical research and clinical literature on survivors of the Holocaust and their families\, as this is still the largest body of literature in this field. The research has by now covered the lifespan of survivors and their children\, who are now entering old age\, The mental health professions have not readily accepted the validity of the concept of historical trauma\, and the evidence from Holocaust families has opened the gate for research of historical trauma in other groups\, including the Indigenous nations of America and the descendants of Black slaves in America. \nPotential risks for loss of empathy inherent to the confrontation of trauma therapists with stories of brutality and sadism presented by their patients will be also discussed\, as well as strategies to prevent such emotional biases from interfering with good therapy. \n\nAbout Presenters:  \nIrit Felsen\, Ph.D.\, is a clinical psychologist born in Israel\, living in NY\, specializing in the treatment of trauma and traumatic loss. Her clinical work has focused on Holocaust Survivors and their descendants\, and her research on intergenerational transmission has been published in peer-reviewed journals and book chapters. DESCRIPTION:It’s Complicated: \nNavigating Infidelity and Consensual Nonmonogamy in Couple Therapy\nwith Jean Malpas\, LMHC-D\, LMFT-D and Michele Scheinkman\, LCSW \nFriday\, February 28th\, 2025 3:00pm-7:00pm at ICP\nApproved for 4 CE Credits! \nAll couples navigate a delicate balance between freedom and loyalty in their relationships. Decisions about sexual fidelity and loyalty\, whether explicit or implicit\, are shaped by each partner’s temperament\, vulnerabilities\, identities\, family legacies\, cultural norms and\, sometimes\, by fractures that arise in the primary relationship. Impasses often evolve in these situations. This workshop integrates Michele Scheinkman’s approach to infidelity\, the Vulnerability Cycle\, and Jean Malpas’ integrative framework on gender and sexual complexity to provide therapists with effective tools for addressing these challenges. Participants will explore key conceptual dimensions and interventions designed to help couples move beyond reactivity toward mutual understanding\, negotiation and deeper connection. Through theoretical presentations\, video demonstrations\, and group discussions\, clinicians will gain: \n\nA non-moralistic understanding of impasses related to monogamy and non-monogamy;\nGreater sensitivity to intersectional factors\, including intrapersonal dynamics\, multigenerational legacies and cultural influences;\nPractical skills to interrupt destructive interactional cycles and work compassionately with both partners to promote repair and agreement.\n\nThe workshop will start by presenting Michele Scheinkman’s Vulnerability Cycle and Multi-Level Approach as well as conceptual and clinical approaches to gender diversity and consensual nonmonogamy in couple therapy. It will review the tenets of intersectional integrative couple therapy\, including the understanding of individual and couple’s dilemmas through the lenses of familial\, contextual and cultural experiences of self\, relationship\, belonging and inclusion. A couple of case vignettes will be presented through hybrid case summary and videos\, emphasizing effectively dealing with affairs\, desire inside and outside the relationships\, as well as exploration of non-monogamous arrangements. The clinical material will be used to demonstrate the therapeutic frameworks as well as specific couple therapy skills\, including tracking a vulnerability cycle\, identifying intrapsychic conflicts and motivations as well as the impact of sociocultural dynamics on the couple’s impasse and dilemmas. \n  \nAbout Presenters:  \nJean Malpas\, LMHC-D\, LMFT-D\, is a queer-identified psychotherapist and trainer in private practice in New York City. He founded of the Gender & Family Project at the Ackerman Institute for the Family and co-founded the Couples & Intimacy Project with Peggy Papp and Michele Scheinkman. Jean has presented nationally and internationally on topics of gender\, sexuality\, couples and nonmonogamy for the past 20 years. His work with lesbian\, gay\, bisexual\, transgender and nonbinary individuals\, couples\, and families has been featured in numerous books\, journals and media appearances\, including the TEDx Talk “The Gift of Gender Authenticity.” Jean’s work has been recognized by the Stonewall Community Foundation 2016 Visionary Award and the American Family Therapy Academy Social Justice 2018 Award. \n  \nMichele Scheinkman\, L.C.S.W.\, is a faculty member at the Ackerman Institute for the Family where she founded the Couples & Intimacy Project with Peggy Papp and Jean Malpas. I suggest that the analytic relationship offers a unique situation that – following Laplanche – provokes enactments in which the unsymbolized and unrepresented can speak in their own idiom. Rather than seeking to understand and get out of enactments\, the analyst can unobtrusively companion the patient in states of fragmentation\, disorganization and non-relatedness and thus make space for early and inchoate trauma to speak. Enactment is thus regarded as an “untelling” of what has been trapped in the “unpast” (Scarfone) of continual painful repetition. When the analyst can companion the patient in the emergence of early\, wordless enactments and psychic spaces\, old and constraining “translations” are transformed\, pain that has never been suffered can finally be known by and with an Other\, and time\, self and relatedness are reconstituted. \n  \nAbout the Presenter: \nRobert Grossmark\, PhD\n \nRobert Grossmark\, Ph.D\, ABPP is a psychoanalyst in New York City. Howell/Itkowitz’s dissociative unconscious\, Bollas’ unthought known\, Stern’s unformulated experience\, and my own unexperienced-experience\, regularly appear as constructs in both our theoretical and clinical formulations. Yet there remains a lot of ambiguity about the differences between defensive and ordinary dissociation and the varied forms defensive dissociation in particular may take. Many times\, people confuse dissociation as a defense from dissociation as a structure of the self. Taking Sullivan’s understanding of the self as a system\, I propose a continuum in which defensive dissociation may occur ranging from a more or less continuous self-system all the way up to a discontinuous self-system. I describe the difference between the ‘dissociation of content’ from ‘dissociation as a structure of the self\,’ highlighting clinical phenomena people may come to recognize in their practice. I go on to elaborate on some of the structural features of ‘dissociation as a structure of the self ’ and offer clinical examples. \nAbout Presenter:\n \nJohanna Dobrich is a licensed clinical social worker and graduate of ICP’s four-year psychoanalytic training program. As therapists\, whether we are working with individuals\, couples\, or families\, the pain and impact is something we regularly encounter in our clinical work. Often there is internal conflict\, particular meaning attached to the loss of the relationship(s)\, and inter-generational damage\, that seeps into current relationships. With a deeper understanding of the causes\, impact\, and paths to repair\, we as therapists can intervene to create lasting change and support individuals and families in finding a path forward. \nWe will take a deep dive into this phenomenon and look at the genogram of a family in order to deepen our understanding of the clinical material and examine the personal\, relational\, inter-generational\, and multi-cultural aspects of this phenomena. \nAbout Presenters: \nTracy Ross is a couples and family therapist as well as an organizational psychologist. She has a focus and expertise in adult family therapy\, particularly in the area of family cut-offs\, as well as specialties in discernment counseling and collaborative divorce. She is a graduate of the Ackerman Institute\, where she was a faculty member for 10 years on the Resilient Families project. DESCRIPTION:Hybrid: Virtual and In-Person\nMelting Away Resistance in Eating Disorder Treatment\n \n\nwith Donna Fish\, LCSW-R\nApproved for 2 NYS CE credits \nPatients who come to us with eating disorders initially want change and they are distressed. Most of the time\, however\, the powerful reasons for the development of their eating disorder\, will reemerge. This workshop will focus on the specific outcome and process resistances that are common to eating disorders\, and will offer therapists specific tools to use with patients at the outset so that the agenda for the work is established. Ways to positively reframe and maintain the advantages of symptoms will be identified. Additionally we will focus on ways to preserve safety and to offer the Gentle Ultimatum in order to effectively set up a treatment plan that takes pressure off of the therapist needing the patient to change. \nAbout the presenter:\nDonna Fish LCSW-R\, is a licensed clinical social worker and currently runs a private practice in Manhattan. Current faculty positions include the Center for the Study of Anorexia and Bulimia\, and adjunct at Ramapo College where she teaches the clinical course for 2nd year MSW students. Ms. Fish’s prior guest lecture and adjunct positions include Harvard Medical School Dept. of Continuing Ed.\, and Columbia University.
