We invite current candidates\, graduates\, supervisors\, and alumni—both recent and longstanding—to join one or more of these discussions\, led by our esteemed instructor and supervisor Rose Latino. \nThis is a chance to engage in meaningful conversations and earn continuing education credits in a relaxed\, non-academic setting. Together\, we’ll explore contemporary trauma-related readings\, from memoirs to books on treatment philosophies\, offering space to share your thoughts and feelings. \nEach book will be discussed over two sessions. You can register for as many groups as your time and interest allow. This 2-credit virtual Lunch and Learn will give you the tools and strategies to recognize these behaviors\, communicate effectively with coaches and staff\, and support your clients through treatment and recovery. \nWhat You'll Walk Away With: \n\nA better understanding of how ED behaviors show up in athletes\nTips for handling tricky conversations with coaches\, colleges\, and athletic staff\nIdeas for leveraging sport as part of the healing process\nGuidelines for determining when an athlete is ready to return to play\nWays to assess and work with an athlete’s identity during treatment\n\nDon’t miss this chance to connect\, learn\, and strengthen your skills\nAbout the presenter: \n\nRiley Nickols\, PhD\, CEDS-C is a counseling and sport psychologist who specializes in working with athletes to address mental health and sport performance concerns. \nDr. Nickols obtained an MS in Sport Psychology from Ithaca College in addition to an MS in Counseling Psychology and a PhD in Counseling Psychology from Fordham University. He regularly speaks to athletes\, coaches\, and sports medicine personnel about supporting the mental health of athletes\, disordered eating\, and unbalanced exercise in sport. Additionally\, Dr. Nickols consults with eating disorder professionals on best practices for integrating exercise during eating disorder treatment and is sensitive to the unique demands of eating disorder recovery in relation to training and competing in sport. \nCurrently\, Dr. Nickols is the Senior Program Advisor for Athlete EDGE at EDCare in Denver\, CO where specialized intensive eating disorder treatment is provided for athletes. He was previously the Director of the Victory Program\, the nation’s first residential eating disorder treatment facility for athletes\, from 2013-2021 at McCallum Place in St. Louis\, Missouri. \nDr. Nickols is a member of the United States Olympic & Paralympic Committee’s (USOPC) Relative Energy Deficiency in Sport (REDs) Expert Panel and is listed in the USOPC’s Mental Health Registry. He is a Certified Eating Disorder Specialist (CEDS) and Consultant (CEDS-C) through the International Association of Eating Disorders Professionals (IAEDP) and holds a certificate in the Integrated Treatment of Eating Disorders from the Contemporary Psychotherapy’s Center for the Study of Anorexia & Bulimia (CSAB) in New York\, NY. He currently serves on the Clinical Advisory Council for the National Eating Disorders Association (NEDA). \nDr. Nickols is currently on the steering committee for the Eating Disorders and Body Image Special Interest Group as part of the American Psychological Association’s (APA) Division 38 (Society for Health Psychology) and was on the steering committee for Safe Exercise at Every Stage’s (SEES) Athlete Guidelines. \nDr. Nickols is a member of the Big Sky Sport Psychology Group\, Collegiate Clinical/Counseling Sport Psychology Association (CCSPA)\, American Psychological Association’s Division 47 (Exercise & Sport Psychology)\, and the Association for Applied Sport Psychology (AASP) Eating Disorders Special Interest Group. He is also an Approved Mentor through the Association for Applied Sport Psychology. \nDr. Nickols is a licensed psychologist in California\, Colorado\, Iowa\, Massachusetts\, Missouri\, and New York. Cerfolio\, MD\, is a board-certified psychiatrist\, psychoanalyst\, and Assistant Clinical Professor at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai\, with over 30 years of experience specializing in trauma\, mass shootings\, terrorism\, anxiety\, and depression. Combining traditional psychiatric training with over a decade of spiritual practice in mindfulness and meditation\, she offers a holistic\, collaborative approach to care\, tailoring treatment to each patient’s unique needs. An internationally recognized expert\, Dr. Cerfolio frequently shares insights through media appearances\, speaking engagements\, and her acclaimed book\, Psychoanalytic and Spiritual Perspectives on Terrorism\, which explores the roots of terrorism and paths to healing. Dedicated to relieving emotional suffering\, she empowers patients to transcend life’s challenges and achieve emotional wellness. \nDr. Gerard Fromm\, Ph.D.\, ABPP\, is a psychoanalyst and Distinguished Faculty at the Erikson Institute of the Austen Riggs Center\, where he spent much of his career as a psychotherapist and program leader. She is faculty and supervisor in the William Alanson White Institute Child/Adolescent Psychotherapy Training Program\, the New Directions Program in Psychoanalytic Writing\, Columbia University Teachers College Doctoral Clinical Psychology Program\, and is former head of the Graduate Dance Therapy Program at Pratt Institute. Dr. Pivnck co-hosts the podcast Couched. This workshop integrates Michele Scheinkman’s approach to infidelity\, the Vulnerability Cycle\, and Jean Malpas’ integrative framework on gender and sexual complexity to provide therapists with effective tools for addressing these challenges. Participants will explore key conceptual dimensions and interventions designed to help couples move beyond reactivity toward mutual understanding\, negotiation and deeper connection. Through theoretical presentations\, video demonstrations\, and group discussions\, clinicians will gain: \n\nA non-moralistic understanding of impasses related to monogamy and non-monogamy;\nGreater sensitivity to intersectional factors\, including intrapersonal dynamics\, multigenerational legacies and cultural influences;\nPractical skills to interrupt destructive interactional cycles and work compassionately with both partners to promote repair and agreement.\n\nThe workshop will start by presenting Michele Scheinkman’s Vulnerability Cycle and Multi-Level Approach as well as conceptual and clinical approaches to gender diversity and consensual nonmonogamy in couple therapy. It will review the tenets of intersectional integrative couple therapy\, including the understanding of individual and couple’s dilemmas through the lenses of familial\, contextual and cultural experiences of self\, relationship\, belonging and inclusion. A couple of case vignettes will be presented through hybrid case summary and videos\, emphasizing effectively dealing with affairs\, desire inside and outside the relationships\, as well as exploration of non-monogamous arrangements. The clinical material will be used to demonstrate the therapeutic frameworks as well as specific couple therapy skills\, including tracking a vulnerability cycle\, identifying intrapsychic conflicts and motivations as well as the impact of sociocultural dynamics on the couple’s impasse and dilemmas. \n  \nAbout Presenters:  \nJean Malpas\, LMHC-D\, LMFT-D\, is a queer-identified psychotherapist and trainer in private practice in New York City. He founded of the Gender & Family Project at the Ackerman Institute for the Family and co-founded the Couples & Intimacy Project with Peggy Papp and Michele Scheinkman. Jean has presented nationally and internationally on topics of gender\, sexuality\, couples and nonmonogamy for the past 20 years. His work with lesbian\, gay\, bisexual\, transgender and nonbinary individuals\, couples\, and families has been featured in numerous books\, journals and media appearances\, including the TEDx Talk “The Gift of Gender Authenticity.” Jean’s work has been recognized by the Stonewall Community Foundation 2016 Visionary Award and the American Family Therapy Academy Social Justice 2018 Award. \n  \nMichele Scheinkman\, L.C.S.W.\, is a faculty member at the Ackerman Institute for the Family where she founded the Couples & Intimacy Project with Peggy Papp and Jean Malpas. She is a private practitioner in Manhattan where she offers individual\, couple\, and family therapy in English and Portuguese. Michele has taught couples and family therapy for over 40 years in the United States\, Latin America\, Europe and Asia. During her years in Chicago she was Director of Couples Therapy Training at the Chicago Center for Family Health and a faculty member of the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Chicago. Michele has written extensively about couple therapy on topics of impasses\, infidelity\, intimacy\, jealousy and sexuality.
