She oversees social services\, training\, and intake systems. \n\n\n\n\nSophie Dalsimer\, Co-Director of Health Justice at NYLPI\, advocates for immigrant noncitizens' health and disability rights. With 10+ years of experience in legal defense\, she fights healthcare barriers for vulnerable groups. \n\n\n\n\nNavah Steiner\, is a trauma-informed psychotherapist with 25+ years of experience. Certified in EMDR and IFS\, they specialize in mental health\, activism\, LGBTQI affirmative therapy\, depression\, anxiety\, parenting\, and bereavement in dynamic\, relational approaches. \n\n\n\n\n\nM. Dru Levasseur\, Esq. is a leading advisor and strategist with 25+ years in law\, diversity & inclusion\, advocacy\, and philanthropy. DESCRIPTION:Historical\, Intergenerational\, and Cultural Transmission of Trauma\nwith Irit Felsen\, PhD \nThursday\, March 6th\, 2025 6:00 pm-8:00 pm at ICP\nApproved for 2 CE Credits! \n\nIrit Felsen\, Ph.D.\, will be presenting on the intergenerational transmission of parental/ancestral trauma in different groups\, highlighting the most important aspects of these processes; many of which are common and some unique differences. The lecture will focus on empirical research and clinical literature on survivors of the Holocaust and their families\, as this is still the largest body of literature in this field. The research has by now covered the lifespan of survivors and their children\, who are now entering old age\, The mental health professions have not readily accepted the validity of the concept of historical trauma\, and the evidence from Holocaust families has opened the gate for research of historical trauma in other groups\, including the Indigenous nations of America and the descendants of Black slaves in America. \nPotential risks for loss of empathy inherent to the confrontation of trauma therapists with stories of brutality and sadism presented by their patients will be also discussed\, as well as strategies to prevent such emotional biases from interfering with good therapy. \n\nAbout Presenters:  \nIrit Felsen\, Ph.D.\, is a clinical psychologist born in Israel\, living in NY\, specializing in the treatment of trauma and traumatic loss. Her clinical work has focused on Holocaust Survivors and their descendants\, and her research on intergenerational transmission has been published in peer-reviewed journals and book chapters. Decisions about sexual fidelity and loyalty\, whether explicit or implicit\, are shaped by each partner’s temperament\, vulnerabilities\, identities\, family legacies\, cultural norms and\, sometimes\, by fractures that arise in the primary relationship. Impasses often evolve in these situations. This workshop integrates Michele Scheinkman’s approach to infidelity\, the Vulnerability Cycle\, and Jean Malpas’ integrative framework on gender and sexual complexity to provide therapists with effective tools for addressing these challenges. Participants will explore key conceptual dimensions and interventions designed to help couples move beyond reactivity toward mutual understanding\, negotiation and deeper connection. Through theoretical presentations\, video demonstrations\, and group discussions\, clinicians will gain: \n\nA non-moralistic understanding of impasses related to monogamy and non-monogamy;\nGreater sensitivity to intersectional factors\, including intrapersonal dynamics\, multigenerational legacies and cultural influences;\nPractical skills to interrupt destructive interactional cycles and work compassionately with both partners to promote repair and agreement.\n\nThe workshop will start by presenting Michele Scheinkman’s Vulnerability Cycle and Multi-Level Approach as well as conceptual and clinical approaches to gender diversity and consensual nonmonogamy in couple therapy. It will review the tenets of intersectional integrative couple therapy\, including the understanding of individual and couple’s dilemmas through the lenses of familial\, contextual and cultural experiences of self\, relationship\, belonging and inclusion. A couple of case vignettes will be presented through hybrid case summary and videos\, emphasizing effectively dealing with affairs\, desire inside and outside the relationships\, as well as exploration of non-monogamous arrangements. The clinical material will be used to demonstrate the therapeutic frameworks as well as specific couple therapy skills\, including tracking a vulnerability cycle\, identifying intrapsychic conflicts and motivations as well as the impact of sociocultural dynamics on the couple’s impasse and dilemmas. \n  \nAbout Presenters:  \nJean Malpas\, LMHC-D\, LMFT-D\, is a queer-identified psychotherapist and trainer in private practice in New York City. He founded of the Gender & Family Project at the Ackerman Institute for the Family and co-founded the Couples & Intimacy Project with Peggy Papp and Michele Scheinkman. Jean has presented nationally and internationally on topics of gender\, sexuality\, couples and nonmonogamy for the past 20 years. His work with lesbian\, gay\, bisexual\, transgender and nonbinary individuals\, couples\, and families has been featured in numerous books\, journals and media appearances\, including the TEDx Talk “The Gift of Gender Authenticity.” Jean’s work has been recognized by the Stonewall Community Foundation 2016 Visionary Award and the American Family Therapy Academy Social Justice 2018 Award. \n  \nMichele Scheinkman\, L.C.S.W.\, is a faculty member at the Ackerman Institute for the Family where she founded the Couples & Intimacy Project with Peggy Papp and Jean Malpas. She is a private practitioner in Manhattan where she offers individual\, couple\, and family therapy in English and Portuguese. Michele has taught couples and family therapy for over 40 years in the United States\, Latin America\, Europe and Asia. He regularly speaks to athletes\, coaches\, and sports medicine personnel about supporting the mental health of athletes\, disordered eating\, and unbalanced exercise in sport. Additionally\, Dr. Nickols consults with eating disorder professionals on best practices for integrating exercise during eating disorder treatment and is sensitive to the unique demands of eating disorder recovery in relation to training and competing in sport. \nCurrently\, Dr. Nickols is the Senior Program Advisor for Athlete EDGE at EDCare in Denver\, CO where specialized intensive eating disorder treatment is provided for athletes. He was previously the Director of the Victory Program\, the nation’s first residential eating disorder treatment facility for athletes\, from 2013-2021 at McCallum Place in St. Louis\, Missouri. \nDr. Nickols is a member of the United States Olympic & Paralympic Committee’s (USOPC) Relative Energy Deficiency in Sport (REDs) Expert Panel and is listed in the USOPC’s Mental Health Registry. He is a Certified Eating Disorder Specialist (CEDS) and Consultant (CEDS-C) through the International Association of Eating Disorders Professionals (IAEDP) and holds a certificate in the Integrated Treatment of Eating Disorders from the Contemporary Psychotherapy’s Center for the Study of Anorexia & Bulimia (CSAB) in New York\, NY. Participants will be invited to engage deeply with these practices\, observe their impact on their own body\, and learn how to better support their clients’ recovery using trauma-informed\, body-centered techniques. \nAbout the Presenter:  \nAnastasia Nevin MS\, RDN\, CEDRD-C\, SEP (she/her) is a Certified Eating Disorder Registered Dietitian\, Clinical Supervisor\, Somatic Experiencing Practitioner and Yoga Instructor who specializes in the relationship between body\, food\, and trauma. \nAnastasia’s approach is rooted in a non-diet\, weight inclusive\, holistic & compassionate understanding of recovery which incorporates the body into healing. She helps clients (re)learn how to nourish themselves physically and spiritually. \nAnastasia offers nutrition therapy and somatic sessions that support healing from disordered eating and trauma. She uses her warmth as well as her own recovery from an eating disorder to lovingly challenge and empower clients to heal their own relationship to food\, while finding safety and regulation in their body and nervous system. \nAnastasia graduated from Stanford University with Honors in Psychology.  She went on to complete her Masters in Nutrition Education at Columbia University’s Teachers College. Anastasia has worked at both partial hospitalization and day treatment levels of care within eating disorder treatment program settings in NYC\, and was Monte Nido’s Manhattan’s first Lead Dietitian and Yoga Therapist. She has had a thriving private practice for over a decade. \nAnastasia received her yoga training at her beloved home studio Laughing Lotus where she taught dynamic\, musical vinyasa flow classes for many years. She has studied Ayurveda (India's ancient holistic medicine system)\, Restorative Yoga\, Yoga Nidra\, Chakras and Phoenix Rising Yoga Therapy and loves bringing these mind-body-energy practices into an integrative\, trauma-informed\, therapeutic treatment model. \nIn 2022\, Anastasia completed the three year certification program to become an SEP (Somatic Experiencing Practitioner). Somatic Experiencing Trauma Therapy is a body-based\, naturalistic approach to healing trauma founded by Dr. Peter Levine. Anastasia is particularly interested in the areas of chronic pain/chronic illness\, sexual trauma\, and trans/inter-generational trauma. Dr. Jacobs has extensive training and experience using Cognitive-Behavioral Therapies (CBT)\, Family Based Treatment (FBT)\, Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT)\, and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) to treat eating disorders\, anxiety disorders\, OCD and related disorders\, substance abuse\, personality disorders\, as well as varying behavioral and emotional challenges. In addition to conducting individual\, couples and family therapy\, Dr. Jacobs leads CBT and DBT skills training groups. Dr. Jacobs uses her breadth and depth of knowledge to individually tailor treatment to the children\, adolescents and adults with whom she works. Dr. Jacobs received her undergraduate degree from Binghamton University\, her master’s degree (MHC) from Brooklyn College\, and her doctoral degree (Ph.D.) from Fairleigh Dickinson University. While practicing as a clinical psychologist at the Mount Sinai Health System\, Dr. Jacobs also previously held roles as the Program Director of the Mount Sinai Eating and Weight Disorder Program’s Adolescent Intensive Care program\, as well as Director of Outreach and Prevention. Consideration will be given to balancing the individual’s right to self-determination with concern for public health and safety. \nThe presentation will cover the ways to assess the levels of self-neglect and imminent risk\, and how to develop a harm reduction approach and plan of care with interdisciplinary collaboration. DESCRIPTION:The Gendered Body as Home:\nTwo Analysts’ Journeys “Coming Out” to Their Patients\n  \nwith Gabriel DeCicco\, LCSW-R and\nBalin Anderson\, LCSW with\nSandra Silverman as discussant\nFriday\, November 15th\, 2024 7pm-9pm\nRefreshments and conversation at 9 following the lecture\n  \nApproved for 2 NYS CE Credits!\nTogether\, Gabriel DeCicco\, LCSW and Balin Anderson\, LCSW explore the clinical impacts of an analyst’s pregnancy and an analyst’s gender transition; the attendant body changes impact treatment in significant ways. Transitioning to a congruent gender identity or choosing to gestate brings a therapist face to face with their own embodiment; heightened attention to embodiment saturates the therapeutic dyad. A pregnant body is home to the growing baby; a pregnant person grapples with feeling at home with oneself alongside unprecedented changes. A gender transition reflects an effort to come home to one’s body; to belong within the contours of one’s own body. Balin and Gabriel will highlight the interplay of gender\, sexuality\, and identity inherent in these embodied gestational experiences - that of the analyst giving birth and of the analyst being re-born. \nAbout the Presenters: \nGabriel DeCicco\, LCSW-R is a transgender psychoanalyst who has worked in the field of mental health for 20 years. He has an MSW from NYU School of Social Work and is a graduate of both the Psychodynamic Psychotherapy Program and the Psychoanalytic Program at ICP. He was a Clinical Assistant Professor at NYU Langone Medical Center from 2008 to 2015. He is the President of DeCicco Psychotherapy & Consulting\, LLC\, and has a full-time private practice in Manhattan\, where he sees patients both in-person and virtually in the tri-state area. \nBalin Anderson\, LCSW\nA psychoanalyst in private practice in Denver\, Colorado\, Balin Anderson LCSW is a graduate of the ICP's Psychoanalytic Program. She earned her MSW from the George Warren Brown School of Social Work at Washington University in St. Louis\, Missouri. Balin began her career as a social worker at Planned Parenthood of New York City; she also served as a medical interpreter for Spanish-speaking patients. DESCRIPTION:Cultivating Change:\nCase Studies Illustrating the Use of Multiple Lenses in Engaging Substance-Using Clients\nwith Jen Levy\, Ph.D\, Sonya Lazarevic\, MD\, and Nicole Kosanke\, Ph.D \n\nSaturday\, October 26th\, 2024 10am-2:45pm on Zoom\nApproved for 4.5 CE Credits! \n\nThis is an interactive\, multi-presenter day of programming for clinicians working with individuals and families with substance use challenges. This workshop will provide the essentials of a harm reduction/mindfulness approach with Jen Levy\, Ph.D.\, how to use addiction and functional medicine with Sonya Lazarevic\, MD\, and treatment approaches for families and loved ones of those impacted by substance use issues with Nicole Kosanke\, Ph.D. \nAddressing Addictive Issues from a Harm Reduction Framework \nFollowing an overview of the current status of the addiction treatment field\, there will be a discussion of a harm reduction-informed approach that encompasses a range of positive change goals. Case presentations will address both the underlying meaning and function of addictive issues\, along with offering mindfulness-based skills to support the change process. The impact of trauma on the development and treatment of addictive issues will be explored as well. Participants will learn practical skills to work with cravings and reduce risk through guided practices that can be applied in a range of clinical settings. \nConventional and Integrative Approaches in Addiction Psychiatry \nThe discussion will outline medications prescribed in stages of use\, from abstinence to harm reduction\, focusing on the most common substances of use. An integrative approach will be mapped out\, including layers of care from a functional and regenerative approach. Psychotherapists' role as critical pieces in front-line engagement will be explored. A case example will be used to encourage an interactive discussion. \nThe Invitation To Change Approach: How to Help a Loved One Change \nBeing in a close relationship with someone who is using substances is often stressful and confusing. Outlining the Invitation to Change approach will highlight three major areas of research-based strategies for having a positive impact on a loved one: 1) understanding motivation and the change process in a constructive way\, 2) using positive reinforcement and effective communication tools\, and 3) practicing skills of self-awareness/compassion. Participants will learn practical applications within these categories for how clients can take care of themselves while also influencing a loved one in positive ways. \nAbout Presenter:  \nJenifer Levy\, Ph.D.\, is a licensed psychologist with a private practice in New York and New Jersey.\nDr. Levy specializes in the treatment of addictive issues and trauma from a harm reduction framework that is collaborative\, compassionate\, and non-judgmental. Dr. Levy obtained her Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from Virginia Tech and completed her internship and post-doctoral fellowship at Princeton House Behavioral Health. She previously worked as the Assistant Director of The Center for Optimal Living\, an outpatient private practice in NYC\, where she coordinated clinical services and training activities along with providing psychotherapy. She also taught and supervised graduate students in psychology as the Assistant Director of the Concentration in Mental Health and Substance Abuse Counseling at The New School for Social Research. Prior to that\, she was a Supervising Psychologist at the Women’s Health Project at St. Luke’s-Roosevelt Hospital in NYC. \nIn addition to offering psychotherapy services\, Dr. Levy facilitates trainings on a range of topics related to addictive issues\, harm reduction\, mindfulness approaches\, and working with trauma survivors. \nSonya Lazarevic\, MD\, is a general\, addiction\, and integrative psychiatrist with a private practice in New York and Connecticut. She began her career as a clinical social worker in the ’90’s. In the mid-2000’s she attended St. George's University Medical School and subsequently completed fellowships in\naddiction psychiatry at NYU and integrative medicine at the University of Arizona. Currently\, she is deepening her clinical practice to include functional and regenerative medicine approaches and complements care with essential oils. Since college\, she’s maintained a regular meditation/yoga practice and trained in various holistic disciplines. \nDr. Nicole Kosanke is a licensed clinical psychologist with 20+ years of experience treating substance use disorders in individuals and families. Dr. Kosanke utilizes the principles of ITC (Invitation to Change)\, motivational interviewing\, and cognitive behavioral therapy in different therapeutic modalities and resources: group\, individual\, family\, video training\, and written materials. She co-authored the book\, Beyond Addiction: How Science and Kindness Help People Change\, which is a compassionate and science-based family guide for navigating the addiction treatment world\, understanding motivation\, and using CRAFT skills. Dr. Kosanke also serves as a consulting psychologist and trainer for CMC:FFC\, a nonprofit organization providing evidence-based skills training to family members who have a loved one struggling with substance use issues.
