DESCRIPTION:The Importance of Recognizing Different Trauma Syndromes and Their Neurobiological Differences with Antonieta Contreras\n \n\n\nThursday\, May 29th\, 2025 \n5:30 - 7:30 pm EST \nvirtual on Zoom\n2 CE credits \n  \nThis 2-hour workshop explores how trauma rewires the brain at different developmental stages and under various circumstances\, showing that not all trauma fits the PTSD diagnosis. \nWe’ll examine trauma’s impact on the nervous system\, common misdiagnoses\, and differences between early neglect\, adolescent violence\, and systemic adversity. Participants will learn how factors like age\, type\, intensity\, and timing of trauma shape symptoms and guide intervention. Understanding these distinctions improves treatment by aligning interventions with each individual’s neurobiological adaptations. \nThe workshop emphasizes the importance of recognizing diverse trauma syndromes to support deeper healing and recovery. \nAntonieta Contreras\, a former banker and business consultant trained as a mathematician\, is a Gestalt-trained psychotherapist with a Master’s in Social Work from NYU. She specializes in trauma\, holding certifications from the Institute of Contemporary Psychotherapy and NYU School of Medicine. Antonieta combines trauma modalities and contemplative practices learned in India and Tibetan Buddhism in her private practice. She serves as Board Member and Treasurer for the NYC Trauma Therapists\, and as a consultant\, supervisor\, and former co-director of ICP’s Trauma Studies Program. DESCRIPTION:Psychopharmacology for Non-Medical Psychotherapists with Dr. Elon Richman\, M.D.\n\nThursday\, May 1st and 8th\, 2025 from 11:00am-12:45pm\n\n\nThis course provides non-medical psychotherapists with a foundational understanding of psychopharmacology to enhance collaboration with prescribing providers and support their clients more effectively. Topics include an overview of commonly prescribed medications for mood\, anxiety\, psychotic\, and substance use disorders\, their mechanisms of action\, potential side effects\, and clinical considerations. Participants will leave with practical tools to integrate psychopharmacology knowledge into their therapeutic practice. \nAbout Presenter: \nDr. Richman is board certified in both general and addiction psychiatry\, with expertise in the treatment of substance use disorders\, behavioral addictions\, mood and anxiety disorders\, post-traumatic stress disorder\, psychotic disorders and attention deficit disorder. In his private practice\, he is dedicated to helping individuals enhance their self-awareness and self-regulation through evidence-based treatments that integrate psychotherapy\, psychopharmacology\, mindfulness and lifestyle interventions. There are many paths to healing and Dr. Richman’s treatment philosophy emphasizes the transformative power of a collaborative relationship to guide clients toward growth and lasting insight. \nIn addition to his clinical work\, Dr. Richman is an assistant clinical professor of psychiatry at NYU Grossman School of Medicine. He completed general psychiatry residency training at Emory School of Medicine\, with supplemental certifications through the Emory Psychoanalytic Institute and Institute for Dialogic Practice. DESCRIPTION:Harm Reduction Therapy in Clinical Practice with the LGBTQIA+ Community with Giorgio Handman\, LCSW\nMay 7\, 14\, 21 & 28\, 2025 from 6pm-8pm on Zoom\n8 NYS CE Credits! \nHarm Reduction is an essential practice for all social workers\, especially amidst an ongoing overdose crisis. increasing inequities\, and widespread misunderstanding of substance use and mental health issues. Within the LGBTQAI community substance use is amplified by higher rates of use\, which require specifically attuned harm reduction approaches. It is imperative for social workers to have a clear framework to support themselves and those they work with. This workshop will provide participants with a familiarity and understanding of the core principles of the Harm Reduction Model. Through experiential learning that will incorporate role plays\, dialogue\, and an overview of harm reduction principles\, participants will begin/continue to learn how to apply a harm reduction lens to their clinical work within the LGBTQIA community. This workshop will also explore and discuss complementary interventions that support harm reduction work in practice. There will be an opportunity for participants to share case examples\, engage in teaching/learning and receive peer support/feedback. Participants should come prepared for an interactive workshop that will invite you to self-reflect\, engage in partner shares\, and larger group practices. \nAbout the Presenter: \n\n\n\nGiorgio Handman is a social worker\, artist\, and a lover of harm reduction. He graduated from The Silberman School of Social Work in 2012. Giorgio completed a mindfulness facilitator training at the Engaged Mindfulness Institute and has incorporated mindfulness into his social work practice and harm reduction work with young people experiencing homelessness\, veterans\, people living with HIV/AIDS\, and individuals navigating substance use and currently practices harm reduction at the REACH clinic at Mount Sinai. Giorgio provides harm reduction trainings at hospitals\, shelters\, social work schools and social service agencies from New York to Australia. DESCRIPTION:SICP In-Person Lecture: \nHome is a Foreign Place: Immigrant Journeys\nwith Shari Appollon\, LCSW\, and Lilly Pavlinovic\, PhD\,\nwith Samanta Batra Mehta\, MS\, as discussant\n  \nThrough an intimate exploration of the immigrant experience\, psychoanalysts Shari Appollon\, LCSW\, and Lilly Pavlinovic\, PhD\, speak to journeys of dislocation and the search for home. Drawing on their clinical work and personal histories\, both speakers delve into the emotional mapping of migration\, examining themes of loss\, longing\, identity-formation and transformation. Shari Appollon’s paper contends with the impact of inter-generational trauma and unconscious elements of melancholia through the voices of her Haitian mother and grandmother and the effects of colonization\, and political and economic instability on their homeland. Lilly Pavlinovic’s paper explores the tender and charged analytic space between the psychoanalyst and her patient against the backdrop of a shared language\, and a shared culture torn apart by war and the traumatic splitting of the former Yugoslavia. The analyst in these papers is a transitional object\, linking past to present. The cocoon of the treatment room is a space to articulate profound loss\, re-configure alienation and reconstruct the irreconcilable in an attempt to suture the wounds of history. \nFriday\, April 25\, 2025\, from 7 to 9 pm\, in person at ICP\n Refreshments and conversation at 9 pm following the lecture\nApproved for 2 NYS CE Credits!\n  \n\nShari Appollon\, LCSW\, is a Haitian-American psychoanalyst\, and a graduate of the National Institute for the Psychotherapies and of the One Year Program at The Stephen Mitchell Relational Study Center. Shari is the Associate Director of Clinical Services at NYC Affirmative Psychotherapy. She is the recipient of NIP’s 2020 Educator’s Award for her paper “The Triple Entendre” which was published in Psychoanalytic Dialogues in 2021. Her paper “The Parable of the Sower” was runner-up for Division 39’s 2020 Candidate Essay Contest. She writes primarily about culture and psychoanalytic theory. Shari is in private practice in Brooklyn\, NY. \n\nDr. Lilly Pavlinovic\, clinical psychologist and psychoanalyst\, is a graduate of the NYU Postdoctoral Program in Psychotherapy and Psychoanalysis\, She received her PhD in Clinical Psychology from the Derner Institute at Adelphi University\, and her M.A. in Psychoanalytic Studies from the New School. She has a B.A. in Comparative Literature and Philosophy from the University of Zagreb in Croatia. Dr. Pavlinovic has presented papers at various international conferences. Her scholarly interests include working with patients with trauma histories related to war and immigration\, transformations of unrepresented states\, and Bionian and Post-Bionian Field theory.  She maintains a private practice in New York City. \nSamanta Batra Mehta\, MS\, is an advanced psychoanalytic candidate at ICP and a visual artist based in New York. Her artwork explores themes relating to identity\, memory and migration and has been exhibited in museums\, galleries and art fairs internationally. She is a recipient of NAAP's Gradiva Award for her art\, and the Joan Mitchell Foundation's Painters and Sculptors Grant Award.
