DESCRIPTION:The Sexually Well-Informed Clinician: Principles and Practices of Sex Therapy\n \nwith Ian Kerner\, PhD\, LMFT\nFridays; October 3\, 10\, 17\, 24\, 31\, November 7\, 21\, December 5\, 12\, and 19\, 2025 from 9:30AM-11:30AM EST on Zoom\nThis event is approved for approved for 20 AASECT CE + 20 NYS CE Credits \nThis workshop will survey the history of sex therapy and delineate models of human sexual response; it will address therapist self-location when dealing with both heterosexual and LGBTQ sexual issues and cover assessment of sexual concerns and case formulation: how to take a sexual history\, conduct a sex-script analysis and use validated scales and measures to diagnose sex issues. Therapeutic interventions will be covered\, including cognitive-behavioral\, psychodynamic\, psychoeducational\, and pharmacological approaches. We will address common sex problems\, including desire\, arousal and orgasm issues. We will be paying close attention to the development and deepening of the therapeutic alliance and the processing of clinical material that happens both in the room and in between sessions through homework assignments. Case studies will be regularly referenced and discussed. \nAbout the Presenter:  \nIan Kerner\, PhD\, LMFT is a licensed psychotherapist and nationally recognized sexuality counselor who specializes in sex therapy\, couples therapy and working with individuals on a range of relational issues that often lead to distress. Ian is regularly quoted as an expert in various media\, with recent features in The Atlantic\, The New York Times\, The Economist and NPR amongst others. Ian contributes regularly on the topic of sex for CNN Health. He lectures frequently on topics related to sex and relationships\, with recent presentations at New York University\, Yale\, Princeton and the Ackerman Institute. Ian is the New York Times best-selling author of She Comes First (Harper Collins) which has been translated into more than a dozen languages. In addition to being a Clinical Fellow of the American Association of Marriage and Family Therapists (AAMFT)\, Ian is certified by the American Association of Sexuality Educators\, Counselors and Therapists and is also a member of the American Family Therapy Academy (AFTA). \nRegistration for this course has closed.

This seminar will guide you through: \n\nThe key differences between disordered eating and eating disorders\nIdentifying subclinical or off-label eating disorders\nRecognizing early signs of eating disorders across various age groups\n\nWhile the DSM-V provides clear distinctions between various eating disorders\, real-world diagnosis often requires a more nuanced approach. Using the DSM as our diagnostic guide\, we will explore clinical examples and engage with participant cases and questions to clarify what constitutes an eating disorder. \nAbout the Presenter:  \nJacob Pine is a licensed Clinical Social Worker in private practice in Manhattan. He grew up in New York City\, and did his undergraduate studies at The Johns Hopkins University and The Peabody Conservatory in Baltimore. He earned his Masters degree in social work from Fordham University\, and received his certificate in the integrated treatment of eating disorders from the Center for the Study of Anorexia and Bulimia\, a division of the Institute for Contemporary Psychotherapy\, a psychoanalytic training institute in Manhattan.\n​\nAfter college\, Jacob had a long and successful career as a chef in and around NYC. He became interested in understanding more deeply the relationships people have with food and diet. He returned to school and began a new career. His love and study of music\, and his appreciation and knowledge of food permeate the work he does. He believes in addressing the issues at hand and treating people individually and with respect and understanding. DESCRIPTION:Kink and Healing\nwith Shveta Mittal\, PhD\nThursday\, June 26\, 2025 from 7:00PM-9:00PM on Zoom\n2 NYS CE and AASECT Credits! \n\nEmerging research demonstrates that BDSM/kink can assist individuals in healing from past trauma. Some kink practitioners appear to intentionally seek out these purposes from kink\, while others may experience healing as a by-product. This presentation aims to increase clinicians’ cultural competence with the diverse spectrum of kink sexualities\, relational dynamics\, and unique experiences of stigma. A brief introduction to the BDSM/Kink Community will be presented\, followed by a review of research and clinical accounts that support personal growth and healing from BDSM/Kink engagements. The risks and benefits of trauma-informed kink play for psychosomatic healing will also be reviewed and discussed. \nOver the course of this workshop\, attendees will learn common myths about BDSM Practitioners\, learn least 3 ways BDSM/Kink can facilitate personal growth and healing from trauma\, and be taught to identify potential risks to using BDSM/kink activities for psychological and somatic healing. \n\nAbout the Presenter: \n\n\n\nDr. Shveta Mittal is a licensed therapist\, certified psychedelic practitioner\, and leather lifestylist with more than a decade of experience helping clients develop a better understanding of themselves while facilitating improved coping\, insight and personal growth. She has worked specifically with first responders and individuals holding multiple minority identities\, providing culturally competent care from a sex-positive\, person-centered\, trauma-informed lens. This workshop will provide a theoretical  understanding as well as clinical techniques in working with sexuality concerns of survivors of childhood sexual abuse. Case material will be discussed. \nIn this four-part series\, participants will: \n\nDiscuss how to create a safe therapeutic environment for survivors\nIdentify important aspects of assessment of childhood sexual abuse\nDescribe the central role of shame for survivors\nDescribe the use of a culturally sensitive relational sexual history to support sexual healing\nList clinical techniques that help survivors safely become more sexual\n\nAbout the Presenter: \n\n\n\nSuzanne Iasenza\, PhD is on the faculties of the Adelphi University Derner Institute’s Postgraduate Program in Psychoanalysis\, and the Institute for Contemporary Psychotherapy (ICP)\, where she is Co-Founder of the Sex Therapy Training Program (STP). She also teaches at the Ackerman Institute for the Family\, the Westchester Center for the Study of Psychoanalysis and Psychotherapy and the Family Institute of Westchester. She maintains a private practice in psychotherapy and sex therapy in New York. Participants will learn how factors like age\, type\, intensity\, and timing of trauma shape symptoms and guide intervention. Understanding these distinctions improves treatment by aligning interventions with each individual’s neurobiological adaptations. \nThe workshop emphasizes the importance of recognizing diverse trauma syndromes to support deeper healing and recovery. \nAntonieta Contreras\, a former banker and business consultant trained as a mathematician\, is a Gestalt-trained psychotherapist with a Master’s in Social Work from NYU. She specializes in trauma\, holding certifications from the Institute of Contemporary Psychotherapy and NYU School of Medicine. Antonieta combines trauma modalities and contemplative practices learned in India and Tibetan Buddhism in her private practice. Within the LGBTQAI community substance use is amplified by higher rates of use\, which require specifically attuned harm reduction approaches. It is imperative for social workers to have a clear framework to support themselves and those they work with. This workshop will provide participants with a familiarity and understanding of the core principles of the Harm Reduction Model. Through experiential learning that will incorporate role plays\, dialogue\, and an overview of harm reduction principles\, participants will begin/continue to learn how to apply a harm reduction lens to their clinical work within the LGBTQIA community. This workshop will also explore and discuss complementary interventions that support harm reduction work in practice. There will be an opportunity for participants to share case examples\, engage in teaching/learning and receive peer support/feedback. Participants should come prepared for an interactive workshop that will invite you to self-reflect\, engage in partner shares\, and larger group practices. \nAbout the Presenter: \n\n\n\nGiorgio Handman is a social worker\, artist\, and a lover of harm reduction. He graduated from The Silberman School of Social Work in 2012. Giorgio completed a mindfulness facilitator training at the Engaged Mindfulness Institute and has incorporated mindfulness into his social work practice and harm reduction work with young people experiencing homelessness\, veterans\, people living with HIV/AIDS\, and individuals navigating substance use and currently practices harm reduction at the REACH clinic at Mount Sinai.
