Ross\, LCSW & Judith Aronowitz\, RN\, LCSW\nFormat: In-Person & Live on Zoom\nDate: October 30th\, 2026\nTime: 2:00PM to 4:00PM (ET)\nContinuing Education: 2 NYS CE Credits\n\nRegistration \nExpanding on concepts introduced in our previous presentation\, but of equal value for those who didn't attend\, this advanced clinical workshop focuses on therapeutic intervention with families experiencing estrangement\, emotional cutoff\, and significant relational rupture. The workshop moves from understanding family cutoff to the clinical work of assessing readiness for repair\, identifying conditions that make reconnection possible\, and intervening with family members whose experiences and narratives may differ substantially.\n\nThe workshop integrates family systems theory\, particularly Murray Bowen's concepts of emotional cutoff\, differentiation\, triangles\, and multigenerational transmission\, with contemporary clinical approaches to attachment\, relational trauma\, mentalization\, and family estrangement. Karl Pillemer's research on family estrangement and reconciliation also informs the workshop's examination of the conditions that may facilitate repair.\nWhat you will learn: \n\nUse Bowen Family Systems theory to accurately spot the difference between protective relational distance and emotional cutoff.\nTo identify clinical indicators that suggest a family is ready to begin repair or reconnection work\nRecognize multigenerational patterns\, alliances\, and relational injuries that may contribute to the development and maintenance of family estrangement\nFormulate realistic treatment goals that distinguish repair from reconciliation and allow for multiple possible outcomes.\n\nPresenters: \nTracy Ross\, LCSW \n \nTracy Ross is a licensed clinical social worker\, couples and family therapist\, mediator\, collaborative divorce professional\, and parenting coordinator with more than 30 years of clinical experience. Her practice focuses on couples and families navigating relational rupture\, estrangement\, divorce\, and major family transitions. She has developed a particular area of clinical expertise in working with parents and adult children experiencing partial or complete estrangement and in helping families determine when and how relational repair may be possible. \nJudith Aronowitz\, RN\, LCSW \n \nJudith Aronowitz started her career as a Pediatric Nurse before realizing she was most drawn to healing relationships. She trained at the Ackerman Institute for the Family where she was a faculty member for 10 years on the Resilient Family project. She is also trained as a certified Discernment Counselor. Currently\, she is in Private Practice in NYC working with Individuals\, Couples\, and Families. She is passionate about systems thinking and theories and along with Tracy Ross has developed courses on Family work and presents throughout the country.

She has been engaged in psychoanalytic education and training at the Institute for Contemporary Psychotherapy (ICP)\, the New York Institute for Psychoanalysis (NIP)\, and the Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy Study Center (PPSC)\, teaching\, supervising candidates\, and contributing to curriculum and educational programming. At ICP\, she serves in an advisory role to the Board. She also teaches in MIP’s Program in Trauma Studies.  Her clinical\, scholarly\, and teaching interests focus on trauma\, dissociation\, and relational psychoanalysis\, with particular attention to the ways individual experience is shaped by interpersonal and collective realities. She is the author of the award-winning Working with Survivor Siblings in Psychoanalysis\, which explores sibling loss\, disability\, and psychic survivorship\, and editor of Moving from Grievance to Hope in Psychoanalysis: Applied Case Studies\, which examines how psychoanalytic thinking and practice can contribute to social and collective healing.

While psychoanalysis has historically diminished the importance of the body\, this presentation grapples with the challenges of listening to and thinking psychoanalytically about somatic manifestations. Through clinical vignettes from four distinct treatments\, this presentation will explore difficulties in symbolizing somatic expressions for both patient and analyst\, as well as illustrate ways therapists can utilize their own somatic experiences\, countertransference reverie\, and theoretical reframing as therapeutic tools and means of creating transitional space. \nBy situating these bodily manifestations within a psychoanalytic framework\, the presentation will demonstrate efforts to help patients move from unmetabolized somatic expressions and enactments toward an expanded capacity to mentalize. Attendees will gain insight into ways analysts can transform the overwhelmed clinical space into a collaborative arena with potential for psychological integration and symbolic meaning. \n  \nAmy Werner Ragsdale\, LCSW\, is a psychotherapist and psychoanalyst in NYC. She completed both the two-year Psychodynamic Psychotherapy and the four-year Psychoanalytic training programs at ICP. \nAbigail Walch\, LP\, treats individual adults and couples from her office in midtown Manhattan. She is a graduate of ICP's four year Psychoanalytic training program. \nDiana Halperin\, LCSW\, is a psychoanalyst working in private practice in NYC. Diana has a BFA in Theatre from the University of New Mexico\, an MA in Performance Studies from NYU\, and an MSW with an emphasis in group work from Hunter College/Silberman School of Social Work. She completed both the four-year Psychoanalytic and two-year Psychodynamic training programs at ICP. She is a group supervisor in ICP’s Psychodynamic Psychotherapy program. Diana also supervises forensic social workers. \nJess Eipper\, LCSW\, is a psychotherapist and psychoanalyst in NYC. She works with adults and couples in her private practice in Brooklyn.
