DESCRIPTION:Cultivating Change:\nCase Studies Illustrating the Use of Multiple Lenses in Engaging Substance-Using Clients\nwith Jen Levy\, Ph.D\, Sonya Lazarevic\, MD\, and Nicole Kosanke\, Ph.D \n\nSaturday\, October 26th\, 2024 10am-2:45pm on Zoom\nApproved for 4.5 CE Credits! \n\nThis is an interactive\, multi-presenter day of programming for clinicians working with individuals and families with substance use challenges. This workshop will provide the essentials of a harm reduction/mindfulness approach with Jen Levy\, Ph.D.\, how to use addiction and functional medicine with Sonya Lazarevic\, MD\, and treatment approaches for families and loved ones of those impacted by substance use issues with Nicole Kosanke\, Ph.D. \nAddressing Addictive Issues from a Harm Reduction Framework \nFollowing an overview of the current status of the addiction treatment field\, there will be a discussion of a harm reduction-informed approach that encompasses a range of positive change goals. Case presentations will address both the underlying meaning and function of addictive issues\, along with offering mindfulness-based skills to support the change process. The impact of trauma on the development and treatment of addictive issues will be explored as well. Participants will learn practical skills to work with cravings and reduce risk through guided practices that can be applied in a range of clinical settings. \nConventional and Integrative Approaches in Addiction Psychiatry \nThe discussion will outline medications prescribed in stages of use\, from abstinence to harm reduction\, focusing on the most common substances of use. An integrative approach will be mapped out\, including layers of care from a functional and regenerative approach. Psychotherapists' role as critical pieces in front-line engagement will be explored. A case example will be used to encourage an interactive discussion. \nThe Invitation To Change Approach: How to Help a Loved One Change \nBeing in a close relationship with someone who is using substances is often stressful and confusing. Outlining the Invitation to Change approach will highlight three major areas of research-based strategies for having a positive impact on a loved one: 1) understanding motivation and the change process in a constructive way\, 2) using positive reinforcement and effective communication tools\, and 3) practicing skills of self-awareness/compassion. Participants will learn practical applications within these categories for how clients can take care of themselves while also influencing a loved one in positive ways. \nAbout Presenter:  \nJenifer Levy\, Ph.D.\, is a licensed psychologist with a private practice in New York and New Jersey.\nDr. Levy specializes in the treatment of addictive issues and trauma from a harm reduction framework that is collaborative\, compassionate\, and non-judgmental. Dr. Levy obtained her Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from Virginia Tech and completed her internship and post-doctoral fellowship at Princeton House Behavioral Health. She previously worked as the Assistant Director of The Center for Optimal Living\, an outpatient private practice in NYC\, where she coordinated clinical services and training activities along with providing psychotherapy. She also taught and supervised graduate students in psychology as the Assistant Director of the Concentration in Mental Health and Substance Abuse Counseling at The New School for Social Research. Prior to that\, she was a Supervising Psychologist at the Women’s Health Project at St. Luke’s-Roosevelt Hospital in NYC. \nIn addition to offering psychotherapy services\, Dr. Levy facilitates trainings on a range of topics related to addictive issues\, harm reduction\, mindfulness approaches\, and working with trauma survivors. \nSonya Lazarevic\, MD\, is a general\, addiction\, and integrative psychiatrist with a private practice in New York and Connecticut. She began her career as a clinical social worker in the ’90’s. In the mid-2000’s she attended St. George's University Medical School and subsequently completed fellowships in\naddiction psychiatry at NYU and integrative medicine at the University of Arizona. Currently\, she is deepening her clinical practice to include functional and regenerative medicine approaches and complements care with essential oils. Since college\, she’s maintained a regular meditation/yoga practice and trained in various holistic disciplines. \nDr. Nicole Kosanke is a licensed clinical psychologist with 20+ years of experience treating substance use disorders in individuals and families. Dr. Kosanke utilizes the principles of ITC (Invitation to Change)\, motivational interviewing\, and cognitive behavioral therapy in different therapeutic modalities and resources: group\, individual\, family\, video training\, and written materials. She co-authored the book\, Beyond Addiction: How Science and Kindness Help People Change\, which is a compassionate and science-based family guide for navigating the addiction treatment world\, understanding motivation\, and using CRAFT skills. Dr. Kosanke also serves as a consulting psychologist and trainer for CMC:FFC\, a nonprofit organization providing evidence-based skills training to family members who have a loved one struggling with substance use issues. I suggest that the analytic relationship offers a unique situation that – following Laplanche – provokes enactments in which the unsymbolized and unrepresented can speak in their own idiom. Rather than seeking to understand and get out of enactments\, the analyst can unobtrusively companion the patient in states of fragmentation\, disorganization and non-relatedness and thus make space for early and inchoate trauma to speak. Enactment is thus regarded as an “untelling” of what has been trapped in the “unpast” (Scarfone) of continual painful repetition. When the analyst can companion the patient in the emergence of early\, wordless enactments and psychic spaces\, old and constraining “translations” are transformed\, pain that has never been suffered can finally be known by and with an Other\, and time\, self and relatedness are reconstituted. \n  \nAbout the Presenter: \nRobert Grossmark\, PhD\n \nRobert Grossmark\, Ph.D\, ABPP is a psychoanalyst in New York City. She lives in New York City where she consults\, teaches and runs a private practice. \nShe has been a faculty member and guest lecturer at Columbia University\, Harvard Medical School Continuing Ed. Dept\, NYU and Institute for Contemporary Psychotherapy’s CSAB division. \nFollowing the publication of her book “Take the Fight out of Food” Donna taught workshops across the US and Canada\, hosted a WEB MD series on Living Well with Depression and was the keynote speaker for the Minnesota School Board Annual Convention. She was seen on multiple television networks\, and has written multiple articles for “The Huffington Post” and “Psychology Today”. \nRecently\, Donna was featured with Fareed Zakaria on the podcast “Go Ask Ali: Our New World Inside and Out” and can be heard on the “David Burns Feeling Good Podcast” speaking on Eating Disorders. Featuring In-Person events.\nExpanding Dissociation Informed Psychoanalytic Practice:\nHow to make conceptual sense of Not-me\, No-me\, & Many mes\n\nwith Johanna Dobrich\, LCSW\nFriday\, May 17th\, 2024 7:00-9:00pm in-person at ICP\n\n  \nApproved for 2 NYS CE Credits!\nIn recent years\, psychoanalysis has undergone a transformation away from an exclusive focus on repressive symptomatology to include dissociative symptomatology. Howell/Itkowitz's dissociative unconscious\, Bollas' unthought known\, Stern's unformulated experience\, and my own unexperienced-experience\, regularly appear as constructs in both our theoretical and clinical formulations. Yet there remains a lot of ambiguity about the differences between defensive and ordinary dissociation and the varied forms defensive dissociation in particular may take. Many times\, people confuse dissociation as a defense from dissociation as a structure of the self. Taking Sullivan's understanding of the self as a system\, I propose a continuum in which defensive dissociation may occur ranging from a more or less continuous self-system all the way up to a discontinuous self-system. I describe the difference between the 'dissociation of content' from 'dissociation as a structure of the self\,' highlighting clinical phenomena people may come to recognize in their practice. I go on to elaborate on some of the structural features of 'dissociation as a structure of the self ’ and offer clinical examples. \nAbout Presenter:\n \nJohanna Dobrich is a licensed clinical social worker and graduate of ICP’s four-year psychoanalytic training program. She is on the Faculty at the ICP\, the Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy Study Center\, and the National Institute for the Psychotherapies\, where she teaches courses on trauma\, dissociation\, and contemporary psychoanalytic practice from a Relational perspective\, as well as supervises candidates in training. For example\, while the AIDS epidemic shaped the experience of LGBTQ identified baby boomers\, how is Pre-exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP) impacting Gen Z youth and millennial young adults? Has there been a generational loss of information now that the Zeitgeist is greater acceptance and rights for the LGBTQ community\, and if so\, how does it and will it impact future generations? And perhaps most pressing\, what impact has the Covid-19 Pandemic and its cascading effects had on those who identify as LGBTQ? How have these effects been either mitigated or exacerbated by  other intersecting aspects of identity such as race\, class\, immigration and dis/ability (to name only a few)?  \nThese questions and more will be addressed over the course of 6 weeks\, through a combination of readings\, film and discussion. Together\, we will take a look back at the history of LGBTQ affirmative psychotherapy\, the racialized history of our current terms ‘gender’ and ‘sexuality\,’ and the experiences of various LGBTQ communities in relation to the AIDS epidemic. DESCRIPTION:The Challenges of Working with Mixed-Status Immigrant Couples: Using IFS and Relational Approaches\n\nwith Rosa Bramble Caballero\, LCSW-R\nSaturday\, April 6th from 10am-1pm on Zoom and in-person at ICP \n  \nOffered in-person and virtually via Zoom!\nApproved for 3 CE Credits!\nImmigration into the United States is fraught with challenges and traumatic experiences\, largely unaddressed by couple’s therapy. The current anti-immigrant\, socio-political atmosphere contributes to a climate where immigrants are seen as undesirable\, and a threat to the economy\, safety\, and culture. Moreover\, recent priorities for raids and deportation are affecting the everyday fabric of daily life for this population. Immigrant and mixed-status couples are experiencing traumatic stress affecting their relational dynamics.\nThe goal of the workshop is for participants to gain an understanding of how the IFS model provides the language and resources to help mixed-status couples heal the pre and post-migratory trauma. Through the use of case studies\, the workshop will address the highly stressful and potentially traumatic experiences that immigrants undergo at different stages of the migration process\, and IFS interventions that support the process of healing for the couple. \nAbout Presenter:  \nRosa Maria Bramble Caballero\, LCSW-R\, is a Certified IFS Therapist. She’s the President of Caballero Consulting Services where she specializes in the treatment of trauma survivors. She is also L2 trained in Sensorimotor Psychotherapy\, EMDR\, and Coherent Breathing. She facilitates supervision\, and workshops and provides organizational capacity building in the areas of migration trauma\, diversity and inclusion\, maternal infant health\, community violence intervention\, and vicarious traumatization.
