SUMMARY:Talking about Sex in Psychotherapy: Why it Matters\, How and When to do it
DESCRIPTION:Thursday\, December 11th\, 2025\n7:00–9:00 PM EST\nVIRTUAL ON ZOOM\n$80 General Admission\n$60 ICP Community\n$45 ICP Therapist\n$25 ICP Candidates and Graduate/Undergraduate Students \n > > Register\nTalking about Sex in Psychotherapy:\nWhy it Matters\, How and When to Do It\nwith Kathryn S.K. Hall\, Ph.D\n\n\nThis event is approved for\n2 NYS CE Credits \nSex is a central part of the human experience\, yet it remains one of the most elusive topics in psychotherapy. This workshop explores why talking about sex is not just important\, but often essential to deep\, effective therapeutic work. When approached thoughtfully\, discussions about sexuality can strengthen the therapeutic alliance\, reinforce boundaries\, and invite access to core aspects of a patient’s inner world\, including identity\, intimacy\, shame\, desire\, and relational dynamics. \nWe will examine how conversations about sex can help move therapy forward when patients are stuck\, evasive\, or when deeper psychological material is trying to emerge. The workshop will also offer practical guidance on how to initiate and navigate these conversations—whether during an initial evaluation or as part of ongoing psychotherapy. \nThrough detailed clinical case discussions and open dialogue\, participants will learn to recognize opportunities to bring sexuality into the room in ways that are clinically meaningful and ethically sound. Questions\, discussion\, and reflection on participants’ own clinical experiences will be welcomed throughout the presentation. \nAbout the Presenter:  \nKathryn S.K. Hall\, Ph.D.\, is a licensed psychologist with over four decades of experience in sex therapy and research. She earned her doctorate in Clinical Psychology from McGill University in Montreal\, Canada\, and has since become a leading voice in the field of sex therapy. \nDr. Hall has lectured and written extensively on topics related to sexual health\, psychotherapy\, and the cultural influences on sexual well-being. Her latest book\, Talking About Sex in Psychotherapy\, is set for release by the American Psychological Association Press in November 2025. She also maintains an active private practice specializing in the treatment of sexual concerns and sits on the Special Classification Review Board\, a panel of experts appointed by the Governor of New Jersey responsible for overseeing treatment progress and determining parole readiness for incarcerated sex offenders. \nShe is passionate about mentorship\, and she provides training in sex therapy for both emerging and experienced clinicians. Dr. Hall also serves as the Book Review Editor for the Journal of Sex and Marital Therapy and is a Past President of the Society for Sex Therapy and Research. \n\nICP Community includes current ICP faculty\, supervisors\, and alumni of ICP’s training programs. Please note that for alumni to qualify for this rate\, you must have graduated within 5 years.\nIf the cost of this event presents a financial barrier\, please contact us at stp@icpnyc.org. SUMMARY:Not Everything is Trauma: Assessing the Depth of Emotional Wounds for Effective Treatment
DESCRIPTION:with Antonieta Contreras\, LCSW-R\, BCN\, EMDRIA\, CCPT-II\nMonday\, November 17\, 2025\n6:30 – 8:30 PM EST\nVirtual\, on Zoom\n(this event will be recorded\, if you miss it\, please reach out for the recording)\n  \n\n2 Continuing Education Credits. \n\nMany clients arrive in pain\, yet not every hurt is trauma—and calling it so can keep them going in circles due to the use of the wrong interventions. This workshop shows how to distinguish between genuine survival responses and the normal\, if painful\, work of adaptation. Drawing on the forthcoming How Deep Is the Wound? (August 2025)\, we’ll trace the neurobiological line that divides emotional wounds from traumatic injuries. You’ll learn “observing-self” exercises and participate in small-group case mapping to read the body-brain clues that reveal a wound’s depth. \nWe’ll explore how culture\, temperament\, and development shape threat perception; when unfinished survival impulses matter; and how to move clients from helpless labels to informed self-assessment and agency. Attendees will leave with practical tools\, clear handouts\, and interventions they can use both in session and as client homework. \n\n  \n\n\nAntonieta Contreras is the author of the award-winning book Traumatization And Its Aftermath. A former banker and business consultant born in Mexico\, she is a Gestalt-trained psychotherapist\, who graduated as a social worker from NYU. She obtained a specialization in Trauma Studies from the Institute of Contemporary Psychotherapy (ICP)\, in Human Sexuality from NYU The School of Medicine\, and is a Board Certified Neurofeedback Clinician. \nIn her private practice\, Antonieta integrates various modalities she’s certified on focused on trauma treatment alongside contemplative techniques she learned during her time in India and from Tibetan Buddhist traditions. Actively engaged in the field\, she has been given presentations in clinics and hospitals about trauma since 2015. She serves as a Board member and Treasurer of the New York Association of Trauma Therapists (NYCATT). Antonieta\, former co-director of the ICP Trauma Studies Program\, is a presenter\, supervisor\, and EMDRIA approved consultant. Her new book How Deep is the Wound?—A Guide to Resolving Your Emotional Struggles from Everyday Insecurities to Ceaseless Abuse is available in Aug 2025. \nGeneral Admission: $80\nICP Affiliated Professionals: $65\nCurrent ICP Therapists: $40\nGraduate and Undergraduate Students/ICP Candidates: $25  \n\n\n\nICP Community includes current ICP faculty\, supervisors\, and alumni of ICP’s training programs. SUMMARY:Clinical Implications of Intergenerational Trauma
DESCRIPTION:Clinical Implications of Intergenerational Trauma\nwith Irit Felsen\, PhD\nThursday\, October 23\, 2025\n5:30 – 7:30 PM EST\nin person\, at ICP\n(this event won’t be streamed or recorded)\n\n\n2 Continuing Education Credits. \n\nThis is a follow-up to an event that took place earlier this year\, but attendance at the previous event is not required. You’re more than welcome to join us even if you missed part one!\nIn the second part of her presentation about intergenerational transmission of parental/ancestral trauma\, Irit Felsen\, PhD will be focusing on clinical implications for working with individuals from trauma-exposed groups. Recent approaches increasingly recognize the importance of historical trauma and of intergenerational processes as these shape the content and expression of particular psychological themes\, vulnerabilities and resiliencies in the descendants of trauma\, and their responses to current traumatic experiences and reminders of ancestral trauma.  Current wars and catastrophes\, national and international political upheaval\, and the erosion of democratic norms have intensely impacted patients and therapists in recent years and require the capacity to address in therapy the fear and anxiety in response to these national and international affairs\, the impact of these experiences on the therapeutic dyad\, and how both patient and therapist are influenced by legacies of historical trauma.  A trauma-focused framework will be presented\, addressing specific clinical factors and interventions for working with individuals whose presenting problems might also be rooted in intergenerationally transmitted traumatic experiences.  Identifying\, comprehending\, and working with the reverberations of intergenerational transmission of trauma might be critical for adequate treatment\, for symptom reduction and for enhancing patients’ resilience and well-being in trying times. \n\n\nIrit Felsen\, PhD is a clinical psychologist specializing in the effects of trauma and traumatic loss and intergenerational transmission of both trauma and resiliencies in families. \nDr. Felsen is an Adjunct Assistant Professor at Columbia University and had been an assistant professor at Yeshiva University Graduate School of Psychology for 14 years. She obtained her MA in Clinical Psychology at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem\, her PhD the University of Hamburg\, Germany\, and her postdoctoral training at Yale University. Dr. Felsen worked in inpatient and outpatient psychiatric settings\, and since 9/11\, has served on a national emergency response team. Dr. Felsen is a Fellow of Division 56 (Trauma Division) in the APA\, chair of the Trauma Working Group of the NGO on Mental Health in Consultative Relationship with the United Nations\, a member of the National Center for Crisis Management and the American Academy of Experts in Traumatic Stress\, and she was chair of the Work Group on Older Adults in the Interdivision APA Covid-19 Task Force. \nDr. Felsen’s research papers have been published in peer reviewed publications including American Journal of Orthopsychiatry; Psychoanalytic Psychology; Psychoanalysis\, Self and Context; American Journal of Psychiatry; Psychotherapy Research; Psychological Trauma: Theory\, Research\, Practice\, Policy; American Psychology; and others. She has contributed multiple book chapters\, among which a chapter in Charles Figley’s “Pandemic Providers” (2023)\, and a most recent one in “Routledge International Handbook of Multidisciplinary Perspectives on Descendants of Holocaust Survivors” (2024). She maintains a private practice in Englewood\, NJ. Dr. \nFelsen’s art has been featured in art exhibitions in Hamburg\, London\, and was chosen as the emblem of the exhibition of the Arts Council of the Morris Area in 2010. \n\nGeneral Admission: $75\nICP-Affiliated Professionals: $60\nCurrent ICP Therapists: $40\nCurrent Candidate/Graduate or Undergraduate Student: $25\n\nAn important note about CEs: ICP is an approved provider of continuing education credits for social workers\, mental health counselors\, marriage and family therapists\, and psychoanalysts through the New York Department of Education. SUMMARY:SICP Lecture Series: Racial Melancholia\, Racial Dissociation\, Racial Rage\, and Racial Guilt
DESCRIPTION:Racial Melancholia\, Racial Dissociation\, Racial Rage\, and Racial Guilt.\nDavid L. Eng\, PhD & Shinhee Han\, PhD\n\nFriday\, October 17\, 2025\, from 7 to 9 pm\nin-person at ICP\n(The lecture won’t be streamed or recorded)\nRefreshments and conversation at 9 pm following the lecture. \n2 NYS CE Credits\nFocusing on the social and psychic lives of Asian Americans\, Eng and Han trace their three-decade collaboration across classroom and clinic\, from their groundbreaking work on racial melancholia and racial dissociation to a discussion of their current thinking on racial rage\, racial guilt\, and the uses of anger for Asian Americans. Using clinical examples\, they investigate the ways in which losses connected to immigration\, assimilation\, and racialization processes are mediated\, mitigated\, and exacerbated through rage and guilt for Asian Americans. In particular\, they explore the exemplary role of the Asian American therapist as an emotional custodian for black rage and white guilt\, along with issues of racial hate in the countertransference. \n  \nDavid L. Eng\, PhD is Richard L. Fisher Professor of English at the University of Pennsylvania\, where he is also Professor in the Programs of Asian American Studies\, Comparative Literature & Literary Theory\, and Gender\, Sexuality & Women’s Studies. SUMMARY:Embrace Pleasure: How Psychedelics Can Heal Our Sexuality
DESCRIPTION:Embrace Pleasure: How Psychedelics Can Heal Our Sexuality\nAn Interactive Workshop on Sex\, Psychedelics\, and The Power of Pleasure\n\nwith DeeDee Goldpaugh\, LCSW\nThursday\, October 9\, 2025 from 7:00PM-9:00PM on Zoom\n2 NYS CE and AASECT Credits! \n\nAfter several decades of clinical research into their therapeutic potential\, psychedelic medicines in clinical contexts stand to shift the paradigm of how we have approached the treatment of depression\, anxiety\, trauma\, and other mental health issues. However research into the impact of psychedelics on sexuality is just beginning. In this interactive presentation\, clinician and author Dee Dee Goldpaugh will outline the emerging research on psychedelics and sexuality\, but go far beyond that to ask questions about how prohibiting pleasure has molded our current drug laws\, why pleasure is omitted from the narrative about psychedelic healing\, and how psychedelics can help us to embrace our erotic power for optimal sexual experiences and sexual self-actualization.  \nBased on their new book\, Embrace Pleasure: How Psychedelics Can Heal Our Sexuality\, Dee Dee will provide practical education on psychedelic preparation and integration in sex therapy practice\, explore how different psychedelic medicines impact sexual satisfaction and pleasure\, and offer a new framework for working with sexual trauma. Grounded in research\, this presentation will also strive to critique the neo-liberal and capitalist structures that exist in our society and in psychedelic science that prevent us from embracing pleasure\, creating community\, and engaging in meaningful erotic connection while centering on the uplifting message that pleasure (and psychedelics medicines) have the power to heal us.  \nAbout the Presenter: \nDee Dee Goldpaugh\, LCSW is a psychotherapist\, consultant\, educator\, and author. They are the Clinical Director of Chrysalis Integrative Psychotherapy\, the Women\, Gender Diversity\, and Sexual Minorities Advisor for The Chacruna Institute for Psychedelic Plant Medicines\, and they are part of the Ketamine-Assisted Psychotherapy team at the Woodstock Therapy Center. Dee Dee has authored the first paper to appear in an academic journal describing Psychedelic Integration Psychotherapy techniques that incorporate spirituality for sexual trauma survivors. They also served as a Clinical Supervisor for the EMBARK approach to Psychedelic-Assisted Psychotherapy in addition to having facilitated numerous Ketamine-Assisted Transformational retreats. Dee Dee has been a frequent presenter at international conferences including the Interdisciplinary Conference on Psychedelic Research\, Psychedelic Culture\, Psychedelic Science. They have over seventeen years of professional clinical experience and training in diverse modalities including EMDR\, Internal Family System\, Sex Therapy\, psychodynamic\, and transpersonal therapy models and are the author of the book Embrace Pleasure: How Psychedelics Can Heal Our Sexuality.

SUMMARY:The Importance of Recognizing Different Trauma Syndromes and Their Neurobiological Differences
DESCRIPTION:The Importance of Recognizing Different Trauma Syndromes and Their Neurobiological Differences with Antonieta Contreras\n \n\n\nThursday\, May 29th\, 2025 \n5:30 – 7:30 pm EST \nvirtual on Zoom\n2 CE credits \n  \nThis 2-hour workshop explores how trauma rewires the brain at different developmental stages and under various circumstances\, showing that not all trauma fits the PTSD diagnosis. \nWe’ll examine trauma’s impact on the nervous system\, common misdiagnoses\, and differences between early neglect\, adolescent violence\, and systemic adversity. SUMMARY:In-Person Lecture: Home is a Foreign Place: Immigrant Journeys
DESCRIPTION:SICP In-Person Lecture: \nHome is a Foreign Place: Immigrant Journeys\nwith Shari Appollon\, LCSW\, and Lilly Pavlinovic\, PhD\,\nwith Samanta Batra Mehta\, MS\, as discussant\n  \nThrough an intimate exploration of the immigrant experience\, psychoanalysts Shari Appollon\, LCSW\, and Lilly Pavlinovic\, PhD\, speak to journeys of dislocation and the search for home. Drawing on their clinical work and personal histories\, both speakers delve into the emotional mapping of migration\, examining themes of loss\, longing\, identity-formation and transformation. Shari Appollon’s paper contends with the impact of inter-generational trauma and unconscious elements of melancholia through the voices of her Haitian mother and grandmother and the effects of colonization\, and political and economic instability on their homeland. Lilly Pavlinovic’s paper explores the tender and charged analytic space between the psychoanalyst and her patient against the backdrop of a shared language\, and a shared culture torn apart by war and the traumatic splitting of the former Yugoslavia. The analyst in these papers is a transitional object\, linking past to present. The cocoon of the treatment room is a space to articulate profound loss\, re-configure alienation and reconstruct the irreconcilable in an attempt to suture the wounds of history. \nFriday\, April 25\, 2025\, from 7 to 9 pm\, in person at ICP\n Refreshments and conversation at 9 pm following the lecture\nApproved for 2 NYS CE Credits!\n  \n\nShari Appollon\, LCSW\, is a Haitian-American psychoanalyst\, and a graduate of the National Institute for the Psychotherapies and of the One Year Program at The Stephen Mitchell Relational Study Center. SUMMARY:In-Person Lecture: The Gendered Body as Home: Two Analysts’ Journeys “Coming Out” to Their Patients
DESCRIPTION:The Gendered Body as Home:\nTwo Analysts’ Journeys “Coming Out” to Their Patients\n \nwith Gabriel DeCicco\, LCSW-R and\nBalin Anderson\, LCSW with\nSandra Silverman as discussant\nFriday\, November 15th\, 2024 7pm-9pm\nRefreshments and conversation at 9 following the lecture\n  \nApproved for 2 NYS CE Credits!\nTogether\, Gabriel DeCicco\, LCSW and Balin Anderson\, LCSW explore the clinical impacts of an analyst’s pregnancy and an analyst’s gender transition; the attendant body changes impact treatment in significant ways. Transitioning to a congruent gender identity or choosing to gestate brings a therapist face to face with their own embodiment; heightened attention to embodiment saturates the therapeutic dyad. A pregnant body is home to the growing baby; a pregnant person grapples with feeling at home with oneself alongside unprecedented changes. A gender transition reflects an effort to come home to one’s body; to belong within the contours of one’s own body. Balin and Gabriel will highlight the interplay of gender\, sexuality\, and identity inherent in these embodied gestational experiences – that of the analyst giving birth and of the analyst being re-born. \nAbout the Presenters: \nGabriel DeCicco\, LCSW-R is a transgender psychoanalyst who has worked in the field of mental health for 20 years. He has an MSW from NYU School of Social Work and is a graduate of both the Psychodynamic Psychotherapy Program and the Psychoanalytic Program at ICP. He was a Clinical Assistant Professor at NYU Langone Medical Center from 2008 to 2015. He is the President of DeCicco Psychotherapy & Consulting\, LLC\, and has a full-time private practice in Manhattan\, where he sees patients both in-person and virtually in the tri-state area. \nBalin Anderson\, LCSW\nA psychoanalyst in private practice in Denver\, Colorado\, Balin Anderson LCSW is a graduate of the ICP’s Psychoanalytic Program. She earned her MSW from the George Warren Brown School of Social Work at Washington University in St. Louis\, Missouri. Balin began her career as a social worker at Planned Parenthood of New York City; she also served as a medical interpreter for Spanish-speaking patients. Balin is a faculty member at the Denver Institute for Psychoanalysis. \nSandra Silverman\, LCSW\n \nSandra Silverman LCSW is faculty and supervisor at ICP\, NIP\, and the Stephen Mitchell Center for Relational Studies where she is also co-chair of the committee on Diversity\, Equity\, and Inclusion. SUMMARY:SOLD OUT: In-Person Lecture: Enactment: Its Provocation by the Analyst
DESCRIPTION:The event has been sold out\, if you’d like to be placed on the waitlist\, please email SICP@icpnyc.org. \nEnactment: Its Provocation by the Analyst\n \nwith Robert Grossmark\, PhD\nFriday\, October 18th\, 2024 7pm-9pm\nRefreshments and conversation at 9 following the lecture \n  \nApproved for 2 NYS CE Credits!\nThis presentation will address challenges when working with patients whose trauma and neglect are not available for symbolization and mentalization. I suggest that the analytic relationship offers a unique situation that – following Laplanche – provokes enactments in which the unsymbolized and unrepresented can speak in their own idiom. Rather than seeking to understand and get out of enactments\, the analyst can unobtrusively companion the patient in states of fragmentation\, disorganization and non-relatedness and thus make space for early and inchoate trauma to speak. Enactment is thus regarded as an “untelling” of what has been trapped in the “unpast” (Scarfone) of continual painful repetition. When the analyst can companion the patient in the emergence of early\, wordless enactments and psychic spaces\, old and constraining “translations” are transformed\, pain that has never been suffered can finally be known by and with an Other\, and time\, self and relatedness are reconstituted. \n  \nAbout the Presenter: \nRobert Grossmark\, PhD\n \nRobert Grossmark\, Ph.D\, ABPP is a psychoanalyst in New York City.
