Dr. Jacobs has extensive training and experience using Cognitive-Behavioral Therapies (CBT)\, Family Based Treatment (FBT)\, Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT)\, and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) to treat eating disorders\, anxiety disorders\, OCD and related disorders\, substance abuse\, personality disorders\, as well as varying behavioral and emotional challenges. In addition to conducting individual\, couples and family therapy\, Dr. Jacobs leads CBT and DBT skills training groups. Dr. Jacobs uses her breadth and depth of knowledge to individually tailor treatment to the children\, adolescents and adults with whom she works. Dr. Jacobs received her undergraduate degree from Binghamton University\, her master’s degree (MHC) from Brooklyn College\, and her doctoral degree (Ph.D.) from Fairleigh Dickinson University. While practicing as a clinical psychologist at the Mount Sinai Health System\, Dr. Jacobs also previously held roles as the Program Director of the Mount Sinai Eating and Weight Disorder Program’s Adolescent Intensive Care program\, as well as Director of Outreach and Prevention. Unlike sexual desire which can wax and wane over time\, sexual attraction is often experienced as fixed and unchangeable. Featuring In-Person events.\nExpanding Dissociation Informed Psychoanalytic Practice:\nHow to make conceptual sense of Not-me\, No-me\, & Many mes\n\nwith Johanna Dobrich\, LCSW\nFriday\, May 17th\, 2024 7:00-9:00pm in-person at ICP\n\n  \nApproved for 2 NYS CE Credits!\nIn recent years\, psychoanalysis has undergone a transformation away from an exclusive focus on repressive symptomatology to include dissociative symptomatology. Howell/Itkowitz’s dissociative unconscious\, Bollas’ unthought known\, Stern’s unformulated experience\, and my own unexperienced-experience\, regularly appear as constructs in both our theoretical and clinical formulations. Yet there remains a lot of ambiguity about the differences between defensive and ordinary dissociation and the varied forms defensive dissociation in particular may take. Many times\, people confuse dissociation as a defense from dissociation as a structure of the self. Taking Sullivan’s understanding of the self as a system\, I propose a continuum in which defensive dissociation may occur ranging from a more or less continuous self-system all the way up to a discontinuous self-system. I describe the difference between the ‘dissociation of content’ from ‘dissociation as a structure of the self\,’ highlighting clinical phenomena people may come to recognize in their practice. I go on to elaborate on some of the structural features of ‘dissociation as a structure of the self ’ and offer clinical examples. \nAbout Presenter:\n \nJohanna Dobrich is a licensed clinical social worker and graduate of ICP’s four-year psychoanalytic training program. She is on the Faculty at the ICP\, the Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy Study Center\, and the National Institute for the Psychotherapies\, where she teaches courses on trauma\, dissociation\, and contemporary psychoanalytic practice from a Relational perspective\, as well as supervises candidates in training. She is the author of the book “Working with Survivor Siblings in Psychoanalysis” for which she received the 2023 Sandor Ferenczi Award from the International Society for the Study of Trauma and Dissociation\, and has authored numerous articles on dissociation\, loss and mourning. Therapists and patients often buy into myths believing sex in later life is destined to be limited and disappointing. After years of substandard or non-existent sex in long-term relationships some seniors enter couple therapy feeling hopeless and skeptical that erotic life is possible especially as they experience the physical impact of aging.  \nThis presentation will discuss how to identify and transform limiting cultural and personal narratives\, thus creating potential erotic space within which couples discover erotic lightness and play. Case material will illustrate how to integrate new narrative frames and technique into therapy with senior couples. \nAbout the Presenter:\nSUZANNE IASENZA\, PhD is on the faculties of the Adelphi University Derner Institute’s Postgraduate Program in Psychoanalysis\, and the Institute for Contemporary Psychotherapy (ICP)\, where she also serves as Co-Director of the Sex Therapy Training Program (STP). She also teaches at the Ackerman Institute for the Family\, the Westchester Center for the Study of Psychoanalysis and Psychotherapy and the Family Institute of Westchester. She maintains a private practice in psychotherapy and sex therapy in New York. Her latest book\, Transforming Sexual Narratives: A Relational Approach to Sex Therapy was published by Routledge. \nRegistration has now closed.
