This workshop explores why talking about sex is not just important\, but often essential to deep\, effective therapeutic work. Hall\, Ph.D.\, is a licensed psychologist with over four decades of experience in sex therapy and research. She earned her doctorate in Clinical Psychology from McGill University in Montreal\, Canada\, and has since become a leading voice in the field of sex therapy. \nDr. Hall has lectured and written extensively on topics related to sexual health\, psychotherapy\, and the cultural influences on sexual well-being. Her latest book\, Talking About Sex in Psychotherapy\, is set for release by the American Psychological Association Press in November 2025. She also maintains an active private practice specializing in the treatment of sexual concerns and sits on the Special Classification Review Board\, a panel of experts appointed by the Governor of New Jersey responsible for overseeing treatment progress and determining parole readiness for incarcerated sex offenders. \nShe is passionate about mentorship\, and she provides training in sex therapy for both emerging and experienced clinicians. Eng\, PhD & Shinhee Han\, PhD\n\nFriday\, October 17\, 2025\, from 7 to 9 pm\nin-person at ICP\n(The lecture won’t be streamed or recorded)\nRefreshments and conversation at 9 pm following the lecture. \n2 NYS CE Credits\nFocusing on the social and psychic lives of Asian Americans\, Eng and Han trace their three-decade collaboration across classroom and clinic\, from their groundbreaking work on racial melancholia and racial dissociation to a discussion of their current thinking on racial rage\, racial guilt\, and the uses of anger for Asian Americans. Using clinical examples\, they investigate the ways in which losses connected to immigration\, assimilation\, and racialization processes are mediated\, mitigated\, and exacerbated through rage and guilt for Asian Americans. In particular\, they explore the exemplary role of the Asian American therapist as an emotional custodian for black rage and white guilt\, along with issues of racial hate in the countertransference. \n  \nDavid L. Eng\, PhD is Richard L. Fisher Professor of English at the University of Pennsylvania\, where he is also Professor in the Programs of Asian American Studies\, Comparative Literature & Literary Theory\, and Gender\, Sexuality & Women’s Studies. A specialist in law\, psychoanalysis\, queer theory\, comparative race studies\, and Asian diaspora\, Eng is the recipient of research fellowships from the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton\, the Helsinki Collegium for Advanced Studies\, and the Mellon Foundation\, among others. He is an honorary member of IPTAR and a recipient of the Kessler Prize\, given to a scholar or activist with a major contribution to LGBTQ Studies. Eng is the author of four monographs including\, most recently\, Reparations and the Human (Duke\, 2025).  He is also co-editor of numerous collections including Loss: The Politics of Mourning (California\, 2003) and Q & A: Queer in Asian America (Temple\, 1998). \n  \nShinhee Han\, PhD\, is a senior psychotherapist at the New School University Counseling Service and in private practice in New York City. She is the co-author (with David L. Eng) of Racial Melancholia\, Racial Dissociation: On the Social and Psychic Lives of Asian Americans (Duke\, 2019). She is also a founding member of the Asian Women Giving Circle in NYC\, a philanthropic organization that funds Asian women artist creating social activism and change. However research into the impact of psychedelics on sexuality is just beginning. In this interactive presentation\, clinician and author Dee Dee Goldpaugh will outline the emerging research on psychedelics and sexuality\, but go far beyond that to ask questions about how prohibiting pleasure has molded our current drug laws\, why pleasure is omitted from the narrative about psychedelic healing\, and how psychedelics can help us to embrace our erotic power for optimal sexual experiences and sexual self-actualization.  \nBased on their new book\, Embrace Pleasure: How Psychedelics Can Heal Our Sexuality\, Dee Dee will provide practical education on psychedelic preparation and integration in sex therapy practice\, explore how different psychedelic medicines impact sexual satisfaction and pleasure\, and offer a new framework for working with sexual trauma. Grounded in research\, this presentation will also strive to critique the neo-liberal and capitalist structures that exist in our society and in psychedelic science that prevent us from embracing pleasure\, creating community\, and engaging in meaningful erotic connection while centering on the uplifting message that pleasure (and psychedelics medicines) have the power to heal us.  \nAbout the Presenter: \nDee Dee Goldpaugh\, LCSW is a psychotherapist\, consultant\, educator\, and author. They are the Clinical Director of Chrysalis Integrative Psychotherapy\, the Women\, Gender Diversity\, and Sexual Minorities Advisor for The Chacruna Institute for Psychedelic Plant Medicines\, and they are part of the Ketamine-Assisted Psychotherapy team at the Woodstock Therapy Center. Dee Dee has authored the first paper to appear in an academic journal describing Psychedelic Integration Psychotherapy techniques that incorporate spirituality for sexual trauma survivors. They also served as a Clinical Supervisor for the EMBARK approach to Psychedelic-Assisted Psychotherapy in addition to having facilitated numerous Ketamine-Assisted Transformational retreats. Dee Dee has been a frequent presenter at international conferences including the Interdisciplinary Conference on Psychedelic Research\, Psychedelic Culture\, Psychedelic Science. Within the LGBTQAI community substance use is amplified by higher rates of use\, which require specifically attuned harm reduction approaches. It is imperative for social workers to have a clear framework to support themselves and those they work with. This workshop will provide participants with a familiarity and understanding of the core principles of the Harm Reduction Model. Through experiential learning that will incorporate role plays\, dialogue\, and an overview of harm reduction principles\, participants will begin/continue to learn how to apply a harm reduction lens to their clinical work within the LGBTQIA community. This workshop will also explore and discuss complementary interventions that support harm reduction work in practice. There will be an opportunity for participants to share case examples\, engage in teaching/learning and receive peer support/feedback. Participants should come prepared for an interactive workshop that will invite you to self-reflect\, engage in partner shares\, and larger group practices. \nAbout the Presenter: \n\n\n\nGiorgio Handman is a social worker\, artist\, and a lover of harm reduction. He graduated from The Silberman School of Social Work in 2012. Giorgio completed a mindfulness facilitator training at the Engaged Mindfulness Institute and has incorporated mindfulness into his social work practice and harm reduction work with young people experiencing homelessness\, veterans\, people living with HIV/AIDS\, and individuals navigating substance use and currently practices harm reduction at the REACH clinic at Mount Sinai. DESCRIPTION:Kink and Healing\nwith Shveta Mittal\, PhD\nThursday\, June 26\, 2025 from 7:00PM-9:00PM on Zoom\n2 NYS CE and AASECT Credits! \n\nEmerging research demonstrates that BDSM/kink can assist individuals in healing from past trauma. Some kink practitioners appear to intentionally seek out these purposes from kink\, while others may experience healing as a by-product. This presentation aims to increase clinicians’ cultural competence with the diverse spectrum of kink sexualities\, relational dynamics\, and unique experiences of stigma. A brief introduction to the BDSM/Kink Community will be presented\, followed by a review of research and clinical accounts that support personal growth and healing from BDSM/Kink engagements. The risks and benefits of trauma-informed kink play for psychosomatic healing will also be reviewed and discussed. \nOver the course of this workshop\, attendees will learn common myths about BDSM Practitioners\, learn least 3 ways BDSM/Kink can facilitate personal growth and healing from trauma\, and be taught to identify potential risks to using BDSM/kink activities for psychological and somatic healing. \n\nAbout the Presenter: \n\n\n\nDr. Shveta Mittal is a licensed therapist\, certified psychedelic practitioner\, and leather lifestylist with more than a decade of experience helping clients develop a better understanding of themselves while facilitating improved coping\, insight and personal growth. She has worked specifically with first responders and individuals holding multiple minority identities\, providing culturally competent care from a sex-positive\, person-centered\, trauma-informed lens. In addition to conducting individual\, couples and family therapy\, Dr. Jacobs leads CBT and DBT skills training groups. Dr. Jacobs uses her breadth and depth of knowledge to individually tailor treatment to the children\, adolescents and adults with whom she works. Dr. Jacobs received her undergraduate degree from Binghamton University\, her master’s degree (MHC) from Brooklyn College\, and her doctoral degree (Ph.D.) from Fairleigh Dickinson University. Featuring In-Person events.\nExpanding Dissociation Informed Psychoanalytic Practice:\nHow to make conceptual sense of Not-me\, No-me\, & Many mes\n\nwith Johanna Dobrich\, LCSW\nFriday\, May 17th\, 2024 7:00-9:00pm in-person at ICP\n\n  \nApproved for 2 NYS CE Credits!\nIn recent years\, psychoanalysis has undergone a transformation away from an exclusive focus on repressive symptomatology to include dissociative symptomatology. Howell/Itkowitz’s dissociative unconscious\, Bollas’ unthought known\, Stern’s unformulated experience\, and my own unexperienced-experience\, regularly appear as constructs in both our theoretical and clinical formulations. Yet there remains a lot of ambiguity about the differences between defensive and ordinary dissociation and the varied forms defensive dissociation in particular may take. Many times\, people confuse dissociation as a defense from dissociation as a structure of the self. Taking Sullivan’s understanding of the self as a system\, I propose a continuum in which defensive dissociation may occur ranging from a more or less continuous self-system all the way up to a discontinuous self-system. I describe the difference between the ‘dissociation of content’ from ‘dissociation as a structure of the self\,’ highlighting clinical phenomena people may come to recognize in their practice. I go on to elaborate on some of the structural features of ‘dissociation as a structure of the self ’ and offer clinical examples. \nAbout Presenter:\n \nJohanna Dobrich is a licensed clinical social worker and graduate of ICP’s four-year psychoanalytic training program. She is on the Faculty at the ICP\, the Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy Study Center\, and the National Institute for the Psychotherapies\, where she teaches courses on trauma\, dissociation\, and contemporary psychoanalytic practice from a Relational perspective\, as well as supervises candidates in training.
